STATE WIDE EGG-LAYING CONTEST
The suggestion offered by Prof. J. H. Wood, di
rector of the poultry department of the (Georgia
Statn College of Agriculture, is most timely Indeed
nnd should attract the attention of not only the
poultry producers, but the suggestion should appeal
to all citizens interested In the creation of a new
and important industry. _ . ,
In speaking of the egg-laying contest, Prof. Wood
said:
"The time is at hand when some experimen
tal work in poultry must be done in Georgia. It
is a thirty million dollar industry now, and yet
the only experimental work done Is the meager
•mount conducted at the College and financed
out of the plant which la designed for teaching
only. There are more chickens in Georgia than
In the New England states, and yet thousands
of dollars are spent there each year, while prac
tically nothing is spent here.
“An .egg-laying contest will do more to in-
cresso Interest in poultry production than any
thing we can do and it is hoped that this ex
perimental project will bo under way soon.”
The poultry industry (s dhowlfiR large Increases
each year ia thia state. The climate is admirably
adapted for chicken raising and those engaged in
the business are reaping splendid profits. Thia in
dustry can be made one of the most valuable of all
producing incomes from the farm. Every family
should raise a .sufficiency of chickens and eggs to
supply their own consumption and more bpsidcs.
There is always a market for chickens nnd eggs and
at prices profitable to the producers. Sponsored
by the authorities of the Georgia State College of ‘
Agriculture, such a contest would proVo of much in
terest and. benefit to the people of this state. Let us
have an egg-laying contest nnd under the direction
nnd management of Prof. Wood, it is bound to prove
successful.
THE PRICE OF GASOLINE
The price of gasoline haa outstripped all other nec
essities in advancing and unless some check is put
on the oil companies there is no telling where the
limit will reach. Without a good reason, the price
lix, been advanced continuously until it has reached
27 cents the gallon and additional increases may be
expected. However, there seems to be some hope
frt a reduction in price now that a Frenchman haa
discovered a preparation which will combat the high
price fixed by the present gasoline trust
It ia Mid that a new automobile fuel has been dis
covered, Irolenc, which haa proved by test to be suc
cessful. Tho coat of thia new discovery will be far
irsa than the present price of gasoline and answers
every purpose and ia as satisfactory to the users. It
in to bo hoped that the experiments now being made
will bear out tho contentions of the discoverer and
that the general ipublic will have an opportunity of
buying tha new product
Tho new fuel is non-explosive, but it requires the
uM of gasoline until the machine has become warm
and working—then the new preparation works ad
mirably and entirely satisfactory for automobiles
and other motor vehicles.
It is time for a halt to be made by the gasoline
trust A thorough investigation should bo made by
Uta government .and if no reasonable condition be
P for the increase in price, actloh should be
against those who are responsible for the high
and .the Imposition it ia proving to be on the
who use motor vehicles which consume gas-
'nte present prices are unjust and can not be
defended by,the companies; It is a case of higher
price* and larger dividends for the stock-holders of
these public-sapping companies.
THE'1925 SUMMER SCHOOL SESSION
The prospect for a record breaking attendance
was never better for the University of Georgia Sum
mer School Director Stewart has been beseiged with
iettcra of Inquiries and applications for registration
which points to an unusually large attendance.
Dr. Stewart haa been most aucceasful in the man
agement of thia schooL He haa given to it the beat
there is in him and the record of the past few yearn
aMM that hia efforts have been rewarded.
Tilts year teachers are coming in larger number*
than ever btrfore. It la the orlly school of its kind in
the-aouth offering so much for so little money. Every
coftvenience and entertainment is offered here with
a eutriculum in keeping with all of the higher edu
cational summer institutions. Georgia should appre
ciate this school and appropriate for its maintenance
and support every dollar needed to properly carry
on the work of educating the men and women of this
state.
. The Summer school ia one of the greatest assets
m Athens. Its sessions come at a season of the year
when all line* of business ordinarily are at low tide,
but with this school in full blast every line of com-,
meree receives the benefits. Athens people should
retpond liberally to any call made by thia institution;
we believe that they will.

says they are selling fully Un

Carlton, and from what ho can
judge by preparations made, a
somewhat larger acreage will bo
planted in cotton than last year.
Fertilizers are said to be cash,
but it seems that any farmer can
get what he needs.
MR STEVENS is also a pro-

This convinced him of tha valuo
and importance of breaking our
landa deep down into the clay, and
we can then make good crops
der any conditions. Mr. Storms
says he has a fine prospects for
both wheat and oats, as likewise
his neighboring femurs.
