Fame As Solomon. In Fact, Defendant Says
Verdict Must Have Been Inspired
From On High.
Gypsy Smith begins the
final week of his series of
services at Woodruff Hall
tonight at 8 o’clock.
This morning the evan
gelist will preach at
Crawford and this after
noon at Madison.
Last Sunday ho spoke at Mon-
roc and Commerce, drawing: large
crowds from the surrounding com
munities. According to reports
of his sermons at these places he
made a profound impression on
the people.
Ends Friday
Mr. Smith has spoke at Wood
ruff Hall’ each night except Sat
urday for two weeks and his
three weeks’ series will end next
Friday night.
Each night the large hall has
been filled almost to capacity. It
seats over five thousand people.
Last Sunday night It was pocked
and a crowd similar to the one
that attended last Sunday’s serv
ice is expected to turn out to hear
him tonight.
The song' services have been a
feature of the union services. And
an outstanding part of the song
service has been the contribution
made by the colored people who
have attended the services. Tho
aong service begins at 7:30 o'clock.
Mr. Smith’s subjoct tonight will
bo "Weighed.” Last week he
delivered
on the “
night speaking .
which he declared is the funda
mental doctrine of the New Tea-
tnment. Friday night ho spoke
on "Saul.”
Even preachers haro their
troubles that have to be
aired every now and then in
the courtroom, as the case of
Owens vs. Hawkins, which
was thoroughly ventilated
Friday morning, shows.
The Rev. Owens end tho
Rev. Hawkins are both preach
ers in the colored Baptist
church. Tho trouble all start
ed when Rev. Hawkins, who
lived in the country and was
very desirous of moving into
the city of AthenB, agreed to
pay the Rev. Owens, who
does carpentry In his spare
moments not devoted to
preaching, two dollars a day
for building him a homo in
town.
After the house had been
completed and the Rev. Haw
kins had moved into it, Rev.
Owens claimed that Rev.
Hawkins still owed him $43
for 22 days of work. The
arithmetic Involved in this
computation is rather novel,
when we consider that Owens
was paid at the rate of two
uoiiars a day, bat neverthe
less these aro the flgurea.
in Qrave Erros.
Hawkins asserted that Rev.
Owens was to grave error, that
evidently be hod forgotten
that he had not iinlahed the
Hawkins house, bat that
Hawkins had had to hire
someone else to complete the
work. Owens hotly retorted
that it was more than evident
that Hawkins had completely
forgotten that he had been so
pleased with the house that
Owens had built for him that
he and Afro. Hawkins had
complimented him (Owens)
with a huge turkey dinner. Rev.
Hawkins just os hotly denied
this, and so it raged. The
claims of both were tried be
fore church conferences^ were
appealed for decision to
their numerous friends, were
discussed with gusto by the
whole colored community, but

of Georgia here Saturday in their first football con

Three times before, however, in the very shadows of
the goal post Williams had lifted the oval within a
few yards of the upright in futile attempts.
