Previously tills year the two

game Hartwell showed well against
the locals and this week’s game
should be a thriller.
Coach Wedford Brown’s locals
lost foeir .first game of the
last Wday io LaGrange. The
first qutfrter went scoreless but
from then on LaGrange had things
their way.
A large crowd Is expected, to
see the Friday game, this being
the only game scheduled for Ath
ens this week. The locals are
determined to stage a como-

week and the Hart county lads
are equally anxious for a victory.
Rivalry Is of the keenest nature
between the two schools and al

prove no exception.

BY JOHN G. FISCHER
NNW YORK.—-With Dartmouth’s
recent overwhelming defeat of the
brilliant Chicago team and with
Princeton humiliating Yale and
continued success of the Notre
Dame team, the day of the “smart
football team, composed of “smart
fortball players and lead by
smart’’ captain has dawned
ts fullest glory.
The day of the heavy-browed,
loud-talking husky who used brute
force Is on the wane and la his
footstep.! is following tho other
man.* Irrespective of physical make
up who can thing under the stress
of the moment.
In the old days the quarterback
called a signal, the ball'
snapped back and Into the line
the player tarrying the oval went.
It was mainly a game , then 'of
brute force.
I Knute Rockne’s success
Notre Damn has been built along
dlfferenl lines. Rockne’s playors
i know the game from A to 55.
Every one of them. Ho doesn’t
have slow thinkers on his team
s'mply because they are powerful.
Of course the combination of
brains and brawn Is the best pos
sible but outside of that the player
with brains will he more valuable
than the man with just brawn.
Rockno has done more to pop
ularize the open play than any
other man. Hp has brought out
the forward pass In nil Its glory
and given to the game the scien
tific and strategical viewpoint,
which It has long needed. Rockne’s
field generals are students of
football and the captains of his
teams make a stud}* of the game
lust ns would a student, say, in
history or any other academic
course. For that reason, while
Ndtre Dame doesn’t top the list
this year. It can easily be fore
seen that next year or the yepr
after he will probably be at tke
top again.
And its the brains that’s doing
It, not th 0 brawn.
Day closes the season, when they

MR. R. ORANGE
They used to say Balie Ruth’s
weakness was a base on balls but
you can't get rid of Red Grange
that easily.
It is quite true football is getting
more uncertain every day. . . .
Take this fellow Grange for in
stance. . . . You can never b e cer-
tain whether he's going to run 75
irds or 100 for a touchdown.
Any Pennsylvunlan will tell you
Grange has been thrown for a loss
when he falls to gain more than
J»0 yards on a play.
A sure fire way to stop Mr.
Graugo Is to spike his beef broth
with bichloride of mercury tablets
but this is probably a violation of!
some silly conference rule.
The Pensylvanla game was
walkover for 'Red. ... He spent
most of the afternoon walking ove;
the upturned faces of tho Quaker
table™.
All the critics are convinced
>w Grange Is not the player ho
used to be. . . . Hc’b about 86 per
cent better.
Grange, with his fiery headpiece
Is described ns a flaming meteor
In uctiou. . . . The inaccuracy of
this Is that It Is possible to *qe a
flaming meteor. /
Grange Is liko Man O’ War. . . .
Over a fast track or a muddy one
the great horse was always flrit
across the line. . . . Good coal will
burn in any oven.
The difference between Grange
and others Is the same difference
that separates a bird like Edison
and nn apprentice electrician.
This sale is the direct result of our determination to dis
charge an obligation to the public! It is an expression of deeply
felt and sincere thanks to the people who have helped us build
this great and unusual business.
This‘sale is being offered at a time when people need it most
■at a time when crop conditions and lack of money have creat
ed an emergency! In the en urgency this store steps forth with
the largest stock of clothing in the entire South, nearly a quar
ter of a million dollar’s worth of the country’s best goods, and
offers everything without profit. In many cases at much less
than actual cost to us!
We feel that this is the most substantial way through which
we can weld closer the binding links of staunch friendship be
tween this store and the loyal public of this entire section 1
We say to you now, again, that this is a sale which is des
tined to create new selling records, for these are values the
ijke of which have never before been heard of! And we want
to emphasize the fact that during this sale, the same as during
the past 58 years, the iron-clad guarantee of your money’s
worth or your money back, applies 1
^ This is clothing from the best manufacturers in America 1
Can we do more than to offer it at prices the like of which
have never before been known ih the clothing industry?

Wo went around to the Colo

neRsonV, rtpenfng to Bee “The
Gorilla," whiqh iaf one of those
aftermaths to "The Bat," "The
Cat and the Canary," "The Mon-j
«ter” and n few others of that ilk
which are supposed to cause the
female attendants to shriek with
fear and excitement and a feel
ing of uncertainty to run up and
down the spine of the male pa
trons. The opening wasn’t very
auspicuous so far us attendance
was concerned and only a fair
crowd saw the opening.
The author of the Gorilla wasn’t
taking any chances on missing
fire with the audience. There was
more discharging of fire arms
than a wild west rodeo cut loose;
the wit sounded like "Mutter am
Mumble’s’’ column In the Sunday

twanged of a Mack Sennett com
edy,. Not to miss any of tne
emotions they let Jeff, the colored
butler—you know they always
’'nve to have colored butlers in
those my&tfiry shows—die right
out on the stage in a moat “touch
ing and pathetic manner.”
One thing refreshing, however,
there was no "triangle” element
to the piece and somehow or other
the author forgot all about those
tropical messes of last winter.
This, however, we are certain, was
just a lapse of attention and a
bit of the profanity of “Rain” or
the vulgarity of "White Cargo”
will be inserted at an early date.
But the crowd enjoyed "The
Gorilla.” It laughed kind shud
dered and shriekdc so maybe this
offspring of the “Bat,” with all
its conglomeration and half
story, wsan’t so bad after all.
However, it will never have the
the "Bat” had.
