SCRANTON, Pa. —(A*)— The
hum of industry was again heard
in the anthracite regions Thurs
day as production of coal was
resumed after five months and
seventeen days of Idleness.
Thoisands of workers thronged
around the shafts of the different
coal comoanles everywhere in .the
hard coa! fields at sir o’clock at

Arc re than thirty persons were
taken alive from the ruins and this
sparred the rescuers to frantic ef
forts to penetrate the mass of
snow and shattered houses in
search of, the missing.
Unusual storms had piled
mountain above the mining gully
full with snow which came rolling
dean, snapping off trees and crash
ing through Flimsy cabins as if
they were children's, toys.
In some of them fires were going
for breakfast. The overturned
sto\£s •ignited the cabins and
some of their inmates found death
in snow covered flames.
A bearding house was wrecked
and a church destroyed. In the
boarding bouse apparently
worst toll was taken.
Tells Story.
Perhaps one of the most graphic
stories of the disaster was told
by Tony Valasic, 21 year old *ale«-
man. who was buried beneath the
debris for a period of six hours.
Valasic was taking' an. order from
the boarding house when the slide
occurred.
"1 wa« Just getting ready, to
leave.” the man said, “when I
heard a roar and the snow began
to filter down from* the floor above
ua. I rushed to the door but was
unable* to open it. in the room
with me was Joe Atencia. the
boarding house cook. The next
thing I knew, I was overwhelmed
by tbe debris and found myself In
, a sitting position on the floor, my
legs pinned and l was completely
covered by snow.”
“I did not seem to be badly hurt
and could hear the groans of
Atencia. New and then I would
reach over and pinch him to let
him know I was still alive."
Is Rescued.
"At times I appeared to be only
partly conscious. I never expected
to get out alive.”
/Then I noticed AtenclaW voice
aus growing weaker and
groans were less audible. A few
minutes later he stopped groaning
and his legs moved no more. I
decided that he was gone and that
probably 1 would go In a short
time too. This was fifteen minutes
before I was rescued."
Then I heard the workmen near
ing me and raised * my 1 hand
so they could see me. The next
