Some of the unrocovcred kiiied in
the avalanche which, swent.down

may have to remain wrapped in
the snow until spring, rescue
work directors predicted.
Forty bodies thus far have
been reported recovered 1

ered debris has become so diffi
cult and the chances of rescuing
anyone alive so slight t.*at It
may be necessary to abandon op
erations until the snow is gone.
Estimates place the tot'i! dead
at more than fifty and probably
icss than seventy although th?re
is no way of checking with any
accuracy the exact number en
tombed.
The avalanche crashed down
from the mountain-side at an
hour when people were coming
through the district and those who
may have been trapped is difficult
to determine.
Rescue workers said Friday thnt
me of those caught in the ava
lanche could have lived more than
twenty four hours even though
uninjured because of the extreme
cold. ’ By the end of that time
they would have frozen to death,
the rescuers believe.
