■ WASHINGTON.—(UP)—Fifteen hundred demo
cratic leaders at the Jackson Day dinner here showed
obvious desires_for peace within the party during “*- d
seven hours of patriotic speeches from thirteen
leaders.
Five scheduled speakers were still unheard when
the meeting adjourned at 2:30 a. m. Friday.
The meeting gave every indi
cation that party leedera were
wilting to go further now to end
their difference.) than they'were
the firet time since they met in
the 1924 New York convention.
Prohibition nnd religion—the
two questions which have caused
disastrous discussions in tha pest
—were mentioned by several
speakers but always with the eng.
gettion that they would not b*.
sooverted to the real issues ot
untf, public corruption and equal
privileges.
There was a message from Gov-
ernor A1 Smith of New York, urg
ing that foreign relations, prohibi
tion, agriculture, reform of gov
ernment machinery; conservation
and development of resources and
other questions be treated defi
nitely with stern Jeffersonian
reasoning.
There was a speech from
Smith's old opponent, WJfliam.
Gibbs UeAdoo, which did not men-
ilia Smith or : prohibit"’*^-Jail
