drastic measures against candi
dates who have not avowed sup
porc.
The charge made at Macon
during a politiecal rally by Pope
B. Brock, Macon attorney, that
Senator Ed Rivers, gubernatorial
candidate, had declared against
Smith “behind closed doors,” was
due to be followed up by Rivers
in a formal statement. |
The senator hesitated Monday
night to make a formal announce
ment, but said he considered
Brock’s statement “unfair.” He
then referred to his public stand,
like that of Governor Hardman in
sppport of the national. ticket. . |
Brock had accused’ Rivérs of
telling friends “behind closed
doors that he would rather wvote
for the blackest negro in Georgia
rather than for Al Smith.” The
Macon attorney also attacked the
candidate for governor on the
highway issue, maintaining Riv
ers’ “blocking measures flaunted
the will of the people.”
