~ Tests Of Cosmic Rays
¢ PABADENA, Calif. —!(AP) —
- Further efforts to determine the
_ diroetional phase of the famous
~ “eosmic rays” which he discovered
~ Some. time ago will be made this
i;;,%x’- by Dr. Robert Andrews
. Millikan, president of California
Institute of Technology.
Dr.. Millikan’s conclusion that
* ecreation still is going on, follow
_ ing his success in isolating the]
electron, has attracted interna
tiomal attention.
Regarding his most recent
+ seientific discovery, the Pasadena
_scientist is almost positive that
:ft%sgg tiny bits of energy have their
origin in points more distant than
" the Milky Way.
. ‘lt‘:r'tmké lot of time-and tras
eling to satisfy Dr. Millikan that
the . mysterious rays radiating
earthward from the heaven come
from ‘beyond the Milky Way; and
to. .idetermine more conclusively
‘ their origin and course exunm..-‘
experiments ‘wili be carried on
during the coming months. i
* Di¢-Millikan and his assistant,
Dr.@iH. Cameron, have used o
. Wide iarea of the western hemis
phere as their laboratory for
their study of the rays. First
Afigg,plied their clectroscop:s.
e ability to dctect electri:':ul
currents was more delicate thay
any previously devised, all about
Ca:ifornia. Then they sailed to
«South America and watched the
play of the pith-balls and goll
leaf, ~~hich make up the detecting’i
elements in the instruments, high
in the Andes mountains, deep ini
their valleys and out over the
Pacific ocean.
Among the beams of ok'(-trhvnll
energy, called cosmic rays and do-!
filfi%flas comprising that portion
of “penetrating raditaion” which
isiof gosmie origin, the scientists
fognd'.rays hardy enough to dive
1@&& into water before their
eg%gg was completeiy dissipated.
‘Alihough the expedition ints
the Andes had four primary ob
jects, the most important points
to detérmine were whether cosmic
rays originated in the Milky Way
and” whether there was basis for
the hypothesis that the rays were
due ‘to impact in the earth’s at
mesxfl%re of electrons endowed
with“millions of volts of energ;zl
" acquired in thunderstorms.
In - announcing elimination of
the Milky Way as the power plant
of the cosmic rays, Dr. Millikan
said;
“We took two long series of
observations; each lasting three;
days, at an altitude of 15,400 feet,)
in a deep valley of the Andes,
from which the Milky Way was iAI
sight for another six hours.
“We could detect no differen‘s
at all in the valuer of the read
ings on the electroscopes when the
Milky Way was overhead and
when it was out of sight.”
