Four years after Grover Cleveland was admitted to
the bar in Buffalo, ho was made assistant district at
torney. People trusted him and in 1870 the Demo
cratic party nominated him for sheriff. He was elected
and was a good officer. Eleven years later he was
elected mayor, and at once attracted attention because
’of his demand that the city business be conducted

y—-ONCE - y—/
Cleveland was the first Democratic president chosen
in twenty-eight years and his position at Washington
was difficult. His first term already has been reviewed,
and during his second term he faced much the same
situation. He had been urged- to "turn- the rascals
otit" and give all the offices to Democrats, but he tried
to steer a.mlddle course and. pleased nobody. <
