In 1706, Granby was'ah impor
tant Indian trading post, serving
the Conga res -jeetion. Later a
frontier fort was erected, and in
1802 'the town was made the seat
f the Lexington district.
At the beginning of one entur.v
witnessed the rise of Granby, the
first quarter of'the next century
saw its prestige decline. In 1821
the seat of the district was moved
to the town of Lexington. Colum
bia, a few mile*, had been made
the capita! of tie state, and in a
few years the jeoneer settlement
was deserted.
