Tony was not so faithful a cor
respondent as Crystal, though her
chum- excused her ge_nerously,
knowing tha« Tony had heen
caught in a hectic whirl of sum
mer gayets in the Canadian resort
where she was spending the sum
mer with her mother and father,
But th‘ middle of August brought
a veéry Tony-like scrawl to the
girl who was sweltering in the
city heat.
“Crys, darling,” Tonv began,
“Forgive] Tl've been madly busy
with a fleck of silly voungsters
and a handful of older men who
are tryvin- to teach me °‘life’ in a
big way, Yes, Dick’s still circling
about, like a gloomy-eyed desert
chief who's contemplating a mov
jie-thriller abduction, But just
when he's most pash, I get the
giggles, because he does look so
like a sulky, spoiled little boy,
and then he gets sore and stalks
away. : Thank heaven for a sense
of humor.
“Grand swimming here, and
riding and hiking and mountain
climb’ng. It’s no fair that I don’t
tan., All the other girls are get
ting as brown: as Indians. But,
darn it all, I keep my ‘healthy
pallor,’ as the, lady novelists of
vesierday put™ it,” Tony’s letter
scurried on.
“Pat’s having a swell time, and
Peg knits and gossips on the hotel
veranda. T think she’s happier
than she's been since Pat found
the pot of gola at the foot of the
rainbow. Pat’'s been watching his
step like a good boy, and hardly
wiggles an eyebrow at even the
prettiest girls.. I've had four ‘of
fers’ this summer, but you ought
to have seen little Tony resist!
It's still Dick—but I'm not any
nearer marrying him than I was
in June; not half so near as a
slightly exaggerated engage
ment!”’
