Theatre Guild presents Eugene
O’Nfilt’C "Beyond 'the Horizon,”

Crystal found Tony just return
ed from her Sunday visit to the
Ross family of--Myrtle street,
where the Tarvers had lived be
fore Pat had made hfs money on
a luck£ invention. And, as. too
frequently happened, Tony ‘and
hei* mother <were quarreling, or
rathfr, Mrs. Tarver was quarrel
ing and Tony was trying to soothe
her without giving an inch.
“But Peg, darling, why do you
mind my going to see the Rosses?
Sandy is my very oldest and dear
est. friend. . . . Oh, hsllo, Crys!
You find us at it again. I had
dinner with Pop and Mom Ross
and Sandy. Gorgeous fried chick
en and deep-dish apple plf. Peg’s
fussed about it. It seems that I
had six telephone calls from high
ly eligible young men, including
Dick Talbcjt, and Peg thinks I
should have shed the sunshine of
my smile upon one of them, or
maybe all of them, and then she’d
be accusing me ‘of dtuitilng the
house into a young men’s club—”
In spite of her banter, Tony was
obviously near to tears.
“ A fin: way t o talk to your
mother!”' Mrs. Tarver sniffed and
reached for her handkerchief, h
gesture that never failed to bring
Tony to her knees. >
“Aw, Peg, don’t get your feel
ings hurt!” she begged. ’’But,
honestly, 1 don’t see why we have
to go through thia scene every
time I have Sunday dinner with
the Rosses. I know you aren’t n
snob, that you love and admire
Mrs. Ross just as much as when
she was your best neighbor on
Myrtle street. My Peg couldn’t
ba a snob!”
Mrs. Tarver left the liviwf
nto my shoes. 1
Tony nodd’d, her eyes dreamy.
'I know. That's the way Dick
makes me feel. But I don’t wart
to marry him, and you’d marry
■pablo in a minute if he’d ask
you.”
Crystal stiffened with well-
feigned dignity.' “I said I would
not marry him and hamper his
care-r, even if he asked me. It
was,'on the tip of his tongue to
ask me today, but I kept IWm
from doing it. I couldn’t bear to
refuse him, and since he’s so poor
— found out today,” she interpo
lated truthfully, “that he’s dread
fully poor. I’d only guessed it
before. A young, painter, you
know, could hardly be anything
else, unless-hb parents had mon-
and Pablo has no people. • It’s
hopeless!” and she shrugged dra
matically. *
“But what are you going to do,
Crys?” Tony demanded, all sym
pathy. “Couldn’t you marry him
and go on Working?” she asked
hopefully. \ ■ '
Next: Crystal gets in deeper
than. ever.
