At least five lifeboats already
have been picked up, and one ves

First word of the rescue after
sixteen hours of siienco from that
stormy spot on the Atlantic, came
at 4 a. m. in a message, to the
Radio Marine Corporation.

The Re i Cross method is con
structive in its r.*iation to society.
It provides aid upon proofjhat aid
.s needed. Sucn a method is op
posed to the plan that authorizes
miscellaneous giving and thereby
.ends to pauperize. And the pnn
ciple is adored with a know.edge
ol facta. Here in Athens are
cases where miscellaneous charity
haj been extended to families
through two and three generations
which is to say that an aged moth

Help, being assited through the
agency of an anle-bodied child—
icut without .nvestigation as to
tne producing or working abilities
of tho child—had the effect of
making a dependent of the child,
as well as its parents. Such mis
cellaneous chanty makes paupers
of those fully abie to take caro of
themselves. i • ^
Umy systematic and record
keeping agencies can cure this evil
which is actually damaging to the
commun.ty and to society at large,

women thath ave been supported
by Athens -do through this

| oiten means gross duplication.
I One person gives, not knowing
j khat a neighbor has already given
and so, the recipient gets more
than enough of one thing, and
much too little of another.
Also such charity is usually of u
temporary character. Being hap
hazard it does not provide for
more than a pussing reed, and
the victim toon must go on n.a
round again.
