In Textile Industry
DANVILLE, ‘.'a.-—-(fiP»-—(.‘a’»oper-1
ation etween southern and nor
thern cotton manufacturers is
sought by Lincoln Baylies, new
president of the National Associa
tion of Cotton Manufacturers, who
'planned to leave here today for a
tour of southern textile manufac- |
turing communit.es. ]'
Putting into action his wish to |
establish better understanding and
closer association oi textile pro- |
ducers in the south and north,
expressed at the association’s con- |
vention in Boston Jast month, Bay- |
les will visit Chariotte, N, C.,
Greenville, S. C. and later will ‘
continue to other soutiern cities.
The 35-year-old partner in the
selling house of Amory Browne &
Co., regarded as one of the leaders
of Lhis industry, is of the opinion
that the day is gone when a m.l!
“could play a lone hand and win.”
He considers open exchange of ex-'
perience and certain production
figures necessary to the welfare
of the business. i
Baylies’ trip represents a new
effort to provide for a closer
working agreement between the
National asscciation, whose mem -
bers in 27 s!ates are located
chiefly in the north, and the Am
erican Manufacturers association,
which largely represents southern
textile manufacturers. In 1926 the |
associations met in joint conven- |
tion in Atlantic City. i ]
U.-S. Cigaret OQutput
Is Showing Increase
NEW YORK.—(AP)—Domestic
cigaret production is estimated
to be running more than eight
percent ahead of last year’s,
based on the first nine months of
1928, and the year’'s output is ex
pected to exceed 100,000,000,000
cigarets as compared with some
97,000,000,000 in 1927,
Production, however, seems to
be worrying manufacturers less
than costs of leaf tobacco and re
tail sales prices. Reduction in
prices, which early this year ern
abled some chain stores to put
paspular brands on a “two nack
ages for a quarter” basis, has not
been made by all manufacturers,
nor, as far as can be learned, is
such a reduction expected. Prices
of leaf tobacco, raw material for
the manufacturer, apparently
have shown no signs of seeking
lower levels, and producers say
that until they decline no general
rcduction may be expected in the
price of finished cigarets.
It is pointed out that a slump
of one cent in leaf tobacco prices
would mean a $3,000,000 saving
fcr the cigaret manufactyrers on
the basis of 100,000,000 p-}'uc
tion and the use of 3 pounds of
leaf for each 1,000 cigarets.

Field For Steel Sales
BILOXI, M‘ss.— (AP) —Resi
dence construction provides an
almost untouched market with
tremendous possibilities for the
steel construction industry,
Charles F. Abbott, executive di
rector of the American Inititute
of Steel Construction, said in his
report at the institute’s sixth
annual convention here today.
Abbott estimated 10 tons of
steel as the requirement for the
average house and pointed out
that more than 190,000 residen
ces were built in the TUnited
States last year alone.
“This market awaits only the
educational effort required to
make it respond with the mini
mum sales resistance,” he said.
Airport construction he men
tioned as another new field hav
ing great possibilities.
He listed among needs of the
industry the elimination of price
cutting through use of a uniform
methed of computing costs, con
gervation of iron ore, honest co
operation among steel producers
and intelligent modification of
the Sherman anti-trust law to
perm‘t trade agreements having
for their purpose th econserva
tion of a product or the saving
of an industry.
