Cooperation Sought
In Textile Industry
DANVILLE, Va.—UP)—Cooper
ation ‘between southern and nor*
them cotton manufacturers is
Bought by Lincoln Baylies, new
president of the National Associa
tion of Cotton Manufacturers, Who .
planned to leave here today for a
tour of southern textile manufac*
turing communities.
Putting into action his wish to
establish better understanding and
closer association of textile pro
ducers in the south and north,
expressed at the association’s con
vention in Boston Jast month, Bay*;
lies will visit Charlotte, N. CV
Greenville, S. C. and later will
continue to other southern cities.
The 35-year*old partner in the
selling house of Amory Browne &
Co., regarded as one of the leaders
of Jiis industry, is of the opinion
that the day is gone when a mil!
"could play a lone hand ‘and win.”
He considers open exchange of ex- *
perience and certain produdtion
figures necessary to the welfare
of the business. «
Baylies’ trip represents a new
effort to provide for a closer
working agreement between the
National assetiation, whose mem
bers in 27 states are located
chiefly in the north, and the Am
erican Manufacturers association,
which largely represents southern
textile manufacturers. In 1^20 the
associations met in joint conven
tion in Atlantic City.
U. S. Cigaret Output
Is Showing Increase
NEW YORK.—(AP)—Domestic
cigaret production is estimated
to be running more than eight j
percent ahead of last year’s, •
based on the first nine months of
1928, and the year's output is ex
pected to oxceed 100,000,000,090
cigarets as compared with some
97.000,000.000 in 1927.
Production, however, seems to j
be worrying manufacturers less
than costs of leaf tobacco and re
tail sales prices. Reduction in
prices, which early this year en
abled some chain stores to put
popular brands on a "two pack
ages for a quarter" basis, has not
been made by all manufacturers, ;
nor. as far as can' be learned, is j
such a reduction expected. Prices
of leaf tobacco, raw material for
the manufacturer, apparently |
have shown no signs of seeking
lower. levels, and producers say'j
that until they decline no general
reduction may be expected in tbe I
price of finished cigarets.
It is pointed out that a slump j
of one cent in leaf tobacco prices j
would mean a $3,000,000 saving
frr the cigaret manufacturers on
the basis of 100.0004)00 prlluc-
tion and tbe use of 3 pounds of
leaf for each 1,000 cigarets.

Field For Steel Sales
BILOXI, M’ss.— (AP) — Bear,
deuce construction 'provides an
almost untouched market with
tremendous possibilities tor the
steel construction Industry.
Charles F. Abbott, exocut'vo di
rector of the American Inltltute
of Steel Construction, said In bis
report at the Institute’s sixth
annnal convention here today.
Abbott estimated 10 tons of
Btecl as tbe requirement for the
average house and pointed nut
that mors then 100,000 residen
ces were built in the United
States last year alone.
‘•This market awails only the
educational effort required to
make It respond with the mini
mum sales resistance,'’ he said.
Airport construction he men
tioned as another new field hav- j
Ina great possibilities.
He listed among needs of Ibe
Industry the elimination of price-
cutting through use of a uniform
method of computing costs, con-,
serration of Iron ore. honest co,
operation among steel producers
snd Intelligent modification of
the Sherman anti-trust law to
permit trade agreements having
