r OM THUMB used to be
name to conjure with when
the present older generation
sere children and went to Bar-
turn’s Circus to sec the dwarf,
iencral Tom Thumb. At that time
t was not even Barnum and Bai
?y*s, and the children cried to ride
»n the back of the World’s Big-*
;est Elephant, Jumbo, whose skele
ton is now on display in the Mu
seum of Natural History in New
York.
Cosy and Cheerful
Today, Tom Thumb has passed
an, but his name, with its connota-
:ion of perfect smallness, lingers
and provides the title for this
house of small size which is so
:dmpactly arranged as to give the
mpression of much space.
The long, low line of the root
emphasized by the substantial
s and the horizontal line of
windows is most appropriate
small house of this type. The
painting of this house can also
much to empl._size this low-
flung line. Cream colored paint
for the body of the house and
trim of a rather light bluish-green
form a good foundation; wdth
them, a roof of dull, green-stained
shingles, and shntters of a green
larker than t*ut of the trim
ireuld fit in will.
Inside, the house Is really di
vided into two parts — the living
room, dining nook and kitchen;
and the two bedrooms, hall and
bath. Accordingly, in the color
scheme, these natural divisions
arc taken into consideration.
The actual colors which will be
used on the rooms depend some
what on x th£ point of ' c compass
toward which the house faces. If
the front door is on Vhe west, th
living room will be light and airy,
with a south and west exppsure.
Under such conditions the walls
could te painted a yellowish-green
tint and then a second, stippling,
coat of a decidedly bluish green
put on over it. With such a wall,
nave the woodwork stained brown
and flat varnished, or enameled in
a light color.
Chintz for Emphasis
In the kitchen with woodwork
of apple green and walls painted
cream color, curtains of chintz
printed in a gay vine design of
green with tiny scarlet flowers
II add color and life. Or the
glazed chintz could be put on roll
ers and used in the place of win
dow blinds: filmy marquisette or
voile curtains of cream or green
may be hung over them.
In the dining nook more green
can be used; enamel the benches
and table a solid green and outline
the edge of the table and the panel
moldings in one of the colors

nook plan
carried by the chintz curtains.
Have the curtains of the same
sheer material that is used in the
kitchen, and use the chintz blind.
A bright red geranium on the win
dow sill will heighten the gayness
of the little nook.
Bright Hues for tho North
\ The bedrooms, on the north,
fiay well have much warmer colors
than green used in them. Yellow
and delicate pinks arc the ones
which they claim.
Naturally the hat! is in the light*
est yellow possible, and the bath
room shares the yellow, with
apple green in bath-mat and bor
dered towels.

Do you find
Shopping a
Pleasure?,
Some folks do. They’re the modern shoppers—the ones who
know just what they want—how much to pay—exactly where
they will find the right goods af the right prices.
They’re the ones who realize the value—to them—of adver
tising. They make a practice of reading the advertisements in
the newspapers. Sitting at eastf in their homes, they formulate
their shopping programs. They note the things that interest
them particularly and plan to cut out waste motion, unnecessary
steps and lost time.
Planned in this fashion, shopping loses its terrors. It no
longer leaves you jazzy and jaded. It starts you off with a defi
nite objective and brings you home with a feeling of something
accomplished.
If you haven’t been reading the advertisements, try out the
method. It’s a good one.
The Advertisements Are Your Good Friends—
Cultivate Them.
