CHRISTMAS DAY
Tomorrow is a d. for genuine rejoicing, but not
of the kind that many indulge in. Happily during
the past several years has been a very decided de
crease in the number of those who have made of
Christmas a season for inebriety and rowdyism. More
and more the people are coming to the realization
of its true meaning and more and more they are en
joying it in the sense in which it should be enjoyed.
It should be enjoyed as marking the anniversary
of the birth of the Redeemer. This world is a dift'er-
, ent world by reason of the fact that the Christ came
and left to the people of all the world for all time
the record by which to mould their lives into the
highest and best manhood and womanhood. Regard
less of creeds ypu could scarce find a man who really
at r the bottom of his heart is not glad that Christ
came into this world.
It should be enjoyed as marking the season in
which men should rejoice in their opportunities to
make glad the hearts of those who are in poverty or
sorrow. To uplift mankind, to relieve the distressed,
to care for the widow and orphan, to heal the sick,
VS to clothe the naked, to minister to those in trouble—-
‘ 1 those are a few of the things that Christ came to do
and that he enjoins unrm all who love and follow
Him. And those who follow closest in his path and
observe most completely ms commands along these
lines will got the most enjoyment out of Christmas.
It is a day of happiness for the little children. The
'’ . Redeemer likened His kingdom to the little child.
■ v He loved and blessed the little ones. Therefore in
celebrating His birth it is : icet and proper to give
Aft the center of the stage to the little ones and to make
' them happy in their own childish way.
™ Nor should we forget .that this is a time to lay
AU do,wn all animosities, to cement the bonds of brother
ly love, to smooth out the differences between na
tions, to advocate and work for the coming of the
.... day when this world will truly_exemplify the teach-
ings of the Prince of Peace.
Therefore tomorrow in the home, in the church,
and everywhere let men and women and children
1 sing from the bottom of their hearts: "Joy to the
world, the Lord has come.”
RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR
“Resolutions, we make them, not to keep them,
but to break them”, but there is one resolution that
should be made at the beginning of the new year and
that is to commence a savings account in some of the
banks. Every child should have a savings account in
some bank.' In fact, wo hope that those in authority
will cause to be introduced in the public schools a
system of savings accounts for the children where
they can deposit with the teachers their pennies,
Dickies and dimes. Such an inovation would mean
much for moulding the saving habit and creating
thrift among the children that might otherwise be
neglected by the parents. Savings from one’s earn
ing each week or monthly is a practice that should
be encouraged. No matter, if the amount i< small,
everyone should save something during the year. A
savings account will grow and become worth, while
to those who may need it for a “rainy day". You
can never tell when that day will come. a'few dol
lars weekly deposited in some bank, earning interest,
will soon amount to a sum that can be invested "to
advantage. Even though it requires some sacrifice,
every wage earner should fortify against adversities-
that are liable to come to everyone. Commence the
new year right by opening a savings account in some
of the banka of the city.
WOMEN HOLDING PUBLIC OFFICE
Less than a decade ago, women in Georgia could
no$ vote nor were they eligible to hold office. How
ever, times have changed, and now the women not-
only vote, but they take a lending part in all elections
and many of them are holding state and municipal
offices. In addition to the number of women holding
office, at this time in Georgia, there will be 115 women
to enter office on the first of January. There will
bo six women to enter the office of ordinary in as
many counties; two will become clerks of Superior
courts; sixteen will assume the duties of county
school superintendent; five will become tax receiv
ers and six will be sworn in office as tax collectors.
This is a splendid record made by the women of Geor
gia and before another decade has passed, it is more
than probable that the offices in this state wit: be on
i a fifty-fifty basis with the men.
While we were not in favor of granting suffrage
to the women, we are now convinced that their nd-
yept’into politics has contributed much towards puri
fying and dignifying elections. Certainly the women
