NOW FOR THE NEW YEAR
With the new year just around the corner, it bo-
hooves the people of Athens to commence prepara
tion for accomplishments worth while during 1929.
One Of the important projects for Athens is the issu
ance of baby bonds for street paving purposes. Un
der this system of bonds, the mayor and council could
nave every street in the city without working a finan
cial burden on the tax payers. Mayor Dudley now
has the proposed baby bond plan under considera
tion Which he hopes to have worked out. and submit
ted to the people early in the new year. The r.noy
bond system has worked most successfully in a num
ber of cities in Georgia and it is believed that such a
system would be ideal for Athens. However, the
plan is onJy in the making and it may be assured
that Mayor Dudley will give to it. a thorough investi
gation before endorsing or recommending its accept
ance By the tax payers. .
Another matter of grave importance to Athens is
that of securing new industries. 1929 will see a
greater trend toward the South of industrial plants
than avas experienced during tne present year. Or
ganisation should be perfected through which Ath
ens’ interests can be presentd in a telling manner.
To secure industries for a community re i ores ns
much* attention and business system as it does to op-
erate.any other large business. These who arc antici
pating locating in this section of the country are
prone to select the site that is most suitable for their
Iiife Of industry. Facts and figures should be com
piled on a number of locations and when the oppor
tunity arises for securing a proposed industry, com
plete-information should be in hand for submitting
and pressing the claims of Athens.' The men who are
interested in organizing new plants or moving their
present plants to some other locality, are business
men and mean business. They do not believe in de
laying nor bickering over this, or that point, but they
are qjiick to act when they have found something
that meets their requirements. For. that reason,_ we
sfiouljl be prepared to meet their every, demand in a"
business-like and concrete manner. Let us prepare
Qursel^os for such service to the community and have
in nand such information as will be needed for en
terprises in all lines of industries. x
..There are many other items of importance that
might be mentioned for, Athens to undertake for the
now, year; one in particular, however, is that of se-
cmrimr conventions. While, of course, practically all
of the conventions to be held in 1929 have already
fcoeh-assigned to thi3 or that locality, the work for se-
curlr.fr Conventions to .be held in 1930. should be press-
edlii.the fullest and results gre bound to be attained,
inventions afford a greatei! field for publicityvfor a
community than any other'agency. It brings jo the
town » personnel of citizenship of the most Represent- .
ative, character of their localities. Whether new citi-
ere gained, the impression made on them aids
testing and otherwise advertising the community
>B'<W$hih' conventions are held,
f Let U3 commence the new year right and devote
every-.ounce of man power at our command to make
U)29 {the greatest of all years in the growth and de
velopment of Athens. • ,
