|Merging of Stores
‘ 2 ¢
' Against People’s
L
Welfare, Decision
Merging of stores into chains. is
detrimental to the welfare of the
| American people, according to a
| unanimous decision of three judges
| here last night dec!aring Univer
(sity of Georgia débaters victors
over Washington and Lee.’
} Hamilton Lokey, Atlanta, and
| William H. Dooner, Savannah,
| represented Georgia and upheld
Ithn affirmative side of the gques
| tion, “Resolved, that the merging
of stores into chains is detrimen
tal to the welfare of the American
‘people." Dr. James Brooks, presi
' dent of Lucy Cobb; Miss Moina
| Michael, member of the Georgia |
!Smte Teachers College faculty,
jund Dr. E. L. Hill, pastor of the
| First Presbyterian church, werd
i the judges.
| “Chain stores - are robbing the
| American business of its individu
ality, competition, and they are,
’capitulistic monopolies which are
’in their infancy. They are selfish
in their interests in that they plan
to control the bulk of buSiness, and
thus guide the destiny of busi
ness,” Mr. Dooner declared.
“With their tremendous coliec
tive buying power chain stores
are ablg to buy and sell cheaper
than the independent merchant.
When he puts the independent
merchant out of business, thenl
they will run their prices up and
get practically what they want for
their goods,” Mr. Lokey asserted.
Because chain stores can buy
cheaper, and are run on a more
business like basis they are able
and will be able to furnish the
public goods cheaper than most’
other stores, and therefore are a
great asset to the people, the nega.
tive coutended. Chain stores give
the customer the benefit of their
buying power, and by selling for
cash prevent the consumer from
paying higher prices for goods 1n
order to offset defiiciencies due to
bad debts.

ATHENS TIRE SERVICE
DEALERS IN GOODYEAR TIRES AND VESTA BATTERIES
‘PHONE 916 Vulcanizing and Battery Service 142 W. CLAYTON ST
THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
When Goodyear puts the words “Heavy
Duty” on the side-wall of a tire, everybody
« knows those words mean extra strength,
. ‘extra service, extra wear.
Butin its new Heavy Duty bailoon, Good
vear now puts something more —an out
ward beauty quite as superior as its inner
excellence.
This great new tire is ruggedly hand
some, massively proportioned, and around
either side-wall below its extra-thick and
extra-safe All-Weather Tread runs a single
identifying stripe of silver.
