‘the students had attended the
annual “Ivy Week” celebration of
the burning in effigy the “two
most unpgpular professors at the
institution.”
There are several versions as (0
the manner in which the melee
started. A number of students
! gaid the affair begun after a ner
lvous pollceman turned in a riot
call when he saw a crowd collect
ling
{ Thomas C. Ferguson, a junior,
lsaid a motoreycle policeman, who
rode. his motorcycle into a crowd
of students, was to blame. “Sev
eral of ‘the boys were thrown to
{ the groungtz» when hit by the side
| car,” Ferguison said.
| Hundreds of undergraduates and
| extra details of police joined in
‘-lthe clash near the campus short
;ly before midnight., The melee
{ turned into an old fashioned bat-
I'tle royal with police rushing into
| nearby stores, cases and fraternity
| houses, arresting anvane who
llooked like a student.
: The desk sergeant said upwards
lot 300 were arrested, some of them
| with clothing torn and bearing
| other marks of hand-to-hand con
flict. - i
One of the first arrested was
Rev. Dr. John R: Hart, unoffi
cial chaplain of the University,
who went to the scene to ask the
students to return to their homes.
{ Members of several fraternities
i refused to admit police and the
‘door to the houses were forced
by axes. In some cases the lnc-ksi
were shot off. |
