Big Enrollment
Marks Opening of
Negro School Here
The State Summer School for
Colored Teachers held its formal
opening Tuesday when Prof.
James E. Green, of the department
of sociology of the University of
Georgia; Dr. W. H. Harris and
Rev. R. E. Roman, pastor of the
A. M. B. church, were the
speakers.
Monday was devoted to the
registering of students. The en
rollment is the largest in the
history of the school since 1928.
This increased enrollment is due
to the return of a large number
of the old students and the enroll
ment of many new teachers. The
dormitories were crowded out
Sunday might and citizens have
very generously thrown open their
homes to entertaln the overflow.
Prof. L. S. Malette, assistant
state director of agriculture in
Negro schools, has been added to
the faculty as instructor in agri
culture.
Mrs. Kate T. ‘Moore, teacher
of home economiecs in the Spencer
High school of Columbus, will be
in charge of crafts.
Prof. James E. Hackey appear

day and warmly commended the
director, Prof. S. F. Harris, on
his successful efforts in securing
such a Jarge enroilment and
praised the teachers for the sacri

depression to prepare themselves
to serve their people, 0

of a Jarge number of farm demon

ing of 150 to 200 pounds of Chilean
nitrate has increased the yield by
116 pounds of lint ah acre. In other
words, the side-dregsing alone
made up the difference between the
average yvield and the yield re
quired to make a profit at present
prices.
In demonstrations coaducted in
North and South Carolina, Georgia,
and Alabama, an investment of
$4.12 for side-dressing added $12.60
to the value of the crop on each
acre. The average increase in yield
due to the side-dressing was 156

Four Cases Made
Here Under State
Motor Carrier Act
= C. P. Williams, state represen
tative in charge of enforcing the
newly-enacted motor carrier act,
is in Athens in connection with
his duties. Two out-of-state mo
tor trucks were held up here yes.
-terday and qualified under the
law and a truck operated out of
Crawford was also held up and
made to qualify.
The state law requires that op
erators of motor vehicle trucks
for hire, whether inter-state or in.
{tra-state must pay a franchise
tax of $35.00, a license fee of
$25.00 and carry property damage
insurance in order to qualify un
der the regulatory act. An addi
tional mileage tax is collected by
the office of the state tax com
missioner.
Mr. Williams said that opera
tors of trucks for hire will save
themselves expense by qualifying
before sending out trucks inas.
much as sometimes it is necessary
to detain trucks loaded with goods
intransit, which inconveniences
shippers and also damages the
truck company's reputation for
prompt delivery. One of the mov
ing vans held up here temporarily
yesterday operates out of Balti.
more; another is from Nortolk,i
avd another is from Charlotte, N.
C. They all qualified under the
law, making it unnecessary to
crrry the cases into the courts for
prosecution.
