Held For Slaying
Of Bank Robbers
RANKIN, Texas.—(AP)—Thrae
former officers who collected a
reward of SIO,OOO under the offer
of the Texas Bankers association
of $5,000 for ‘“each dead bank
bandit,” are under indictment
for murder. §
The indictments were returned
on evidence gathered by Frank
Hamer, Texas Ranger captain, in
connection with thé slaying of W.
‘M. Miller and an unidentified
man in January, 1928, during an
alleged attempt to rob a bank
here,
The men na(‘ned are J, O. Bar
field, sheriff of Upton county in
1928, and Clarefice Shannon and
Hugh Gillespie, deputy sheriffs at
that fime. :
Charges of unprovoked Kkillings,
or alleged frame-ups by officers
résulting in deaths, have heen
made in several parts of the state
since che Bankers’' assoclation
posted the reward for dead bank
robbers.
ANYTHING BUT DISHES
BEAUMONT. — Dirty dishes
caused the downfall of one youth
here. He was paroled recently
in juvenile court on his plea of
guilty to a charge of theft. He
was arrested shortly after on the
same charge, He said that he
had to wash too many dishes and
wanted to be put in the rgforma
tory so he could escape the job.
