CELOSIA has really three
kinds; the old-fashioned Cocks
comb that is grown now more for
a curiosity; the crimson Prince's
Keather, that now comes also in
a soft pink and 'a light yellow:
and the Chinese Wool Flower, in
the same shades, that looks like
a round woolly duster,
"EIDELWEISS is the- famous
flower of the Swiss Alps, and
should be in every rock garden.
It has a cfirious white woolly
daisy only a few inches high.
GOMPHRENA has little clover.
like heads in pink, lavender, and
bronze.
GILLA has feathery foliage and
long-stemmed flowers in the pas.
tel shades rike Ragged Robins.
GLOBE THISTLE makes a tall
plant for backgrounds, with
prickly blue balls like large cock
leburrs, and “sets oft” the others
finely. 5
HONESTY has large flat seeds,
enclosed in a white papery disk
which shines like silver. 1t is
particularly good when mixed
with Chinese Lantern,’ and has »
charmingly ghostly effect when
used alone.
RHODANTHE has pretty little
star-shaped flowers of pink, red
and white. 5
STATICE also comes in three
kinds, like Celosia and Gaul. The
perennial kind, Sea Lavender, is
in large feathery heads, general
ly white, and is the prettiest and
most effcteive. The annual comes
in tiny flat tassels, in pastel
shades, and is easily dyed. It is
much used by florists. The Rat.
Tail has long pinkish spikes.
STRAWFLOWERS are the gay
est of all, and come in brilliant
colors and attractively shaped
flowers, like little Dahlias. They
can be had ~from seedsmen in
separate colors or mixed.
SEA HOLLY looks absolutely
artificial, with fine-cut, spiky
leaves of silvery-gray, while the
bright blue flowers have sharp
prickly petals with a tall point
in the middle like a Brown.eyed
Susan.’
XTRANTHEMUM comes in
pink, white, and lavender, ana
look like little water-lilies.
MISS MARGARET RISHER
GRADUATES FROM
THE UNIVERSITY OF ,
SOUTH CAROLINA =
Four years ago Miss Margaret
Clarkson Risher graduated with
honors at the Lucy Cobb Institute.
it will be of interest to her own
and her parents’ friends to know
that quite recently Miss Risher
'has received an A. B. degree
from the Univeristy of South
Carolina, which is located in Co
lumbia. E
The Columbia paper comments
very interestingly upon the fam
ily conmection with the Univer
sity. The first commencement of
the University of Squth Carolina
was held on the first Monday in
December, 1807; that is, 124 years
ago. Among the twelve graduates
was Gorge W, Glenn, who deliv
ered a Frenchh oration. Later he
married Hannal Lawson, and the
line “of descent inclyded connec
tion with sQme of the finest fam
ilies of the state. The old Clark
son dwelling, the birthplace of
Miss Risher, is noteworthy among
the beautiful old homesteads in
Columbia, and remains in the pos
gession of the Crawford-Clarkson
family.
- And coming down to people and
events of this present month of
June, 1931, Miss Margaret Clark
son Risher received "her degree
from the same University as her
great.great-granadfather did, al
though he most certainly would
never, at that time, have dreamed
of such a possibility. —B.
