cordially welcomed and beautiful
ly entertained.
Mrs, McHatton’s lovely home is
always most attractive, and with
the beauty and fragrance of Spring
effectively emphasized in the artis
tic decorations of early blossoms
and soft glowing candle light the
lower floor was enchanting.
The handsomely appointed tea
table was perfect in detail with
colonial silver and silver platters
of daintily embossed sandwiches
and cakes. ‘
Fifty guests were invited for
the happy occasion which marksd
one of the season’'s most beautiful
social events.
Mrs. McHatton was assisted
most charmingly by Miss Marie
McHatton in the entertainment of
her guests.

DEATH OF MISS
LYDA HUNNICUTT
- MOURNED HERE
Miss Lyda Hunnicutt, who died
at her home in Atlanta last Sun
day morning after a very brief
illness, once lived in Athens, often
has visited here, and has many
friends here who will miss her
cheerful. companionship ard faith
ful affection.
As a student in the Woman's
college at Milledgeville, of which
she was a graduate, she was held
in high esteem by the faculty and
by her fellow students. Her natu
ral gifts were varied. She was
successful as a teacher and even
more so in her business connec
tions; her diligence, kindly regard
for others, and unfailing sincerity
making friends for her that con
tinued such through all after
years. -
She took her full share in the
beneficent activities of Trinity
Methodist church in Atlanta, being
one of its most beloved members;
and in every relation of life her
faithfulness and good-will were in
constant and blessed evidence.
She gave much in her lifetime.
She has left comforting and in
spiring memories for those who
loved her as they travel on their
several ways to the Land Beyond.

Literary Editor -
Speaks Thursday
' At Chapel Here
Poetry is Sab—ject of New
Yorker at Address at
University
. Poetry in the truest sense was.
pictured here Thursday by Edward
Davison, noted poet, as “some
thing not necessarily written in
books or verse but the emotional
experiences and attitudes of peo
ple for thousands of years.”
Mr. Davison, one of the asso
ciate editors of the Saturday Re
view of Literature, New York,
was the second of the Barrow
Foundation speakers at the Uni
versity of Georgia. He used as a
topic, “Poetry in General.”
There have heen many definitions
of poetry given but none of them
entirely correct, the speaker de
clared. “It is a hard thing to de
fine. The nearest approach to it
is the definitign of my teacher of
literature at Cambridge. He said
it was ‘Certain emotional experi
ences and attitudes, not necessar
ily found in verse, but in peoples
lives, in nature, and also in
prose’.” .
Poetry existed thousands of
vears before printing came into
existence, he explained. It was
handed down orally by many gen
erations, some of whom were igno
rant, -
“Every day of our lives we read
things the substance of which are
poetry but which are really not
because of emotions and attitudes
expressed in it. Love affairs
where the one of two lovers of
a gir lshot the other used to be
written up as poetry but as they
are written today in the tabloids
they are very far from it,” ‘Mr.
Davison -said.
Mr. Davison is a Scot by birth.
He was educated at Cambridge
university and once edited the
Cambridge Review, the oldest of
the British ~ university journals.
He was introduced by Prof. George
T. Connelly, public speaking in
structor. -
