New Speed Record |
Not Good Enough, |
Campbell States
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—(AP)
Three tetrrific - automobile - speed
records Sir Malcolm Campbell, 47-
year-old Englishman, established
yesterday, were unsatisfactory to
him and he prepared to try to bet
ter them today. :
‘Streaking down the beach at low
tide yesterday In the face of none
too favorable course and wind con.
ditions, Campbell broke his own
previous marks by driving the mile
at 253.968 milesgan hour, the kil.
ometer at 251.340 and the five Kkil
ometer at 241.569 mties an hour.
His twelve-cylinder blue bird
racing nar was slocked one way
over a five-mile distance at 244.200
miles an hour but timing traps
tailed to work on his second run
and he was: not allowed a record
for that distance. Regulations re
quire that a driver be timed tsyo
ways over a course to establish, a
fecord.
On bis first run south over the
12 mile course, Campbell was
clocked at 13.46 seconds over the
measured mile for the astounding
speed of 267.459 miles an hour. His
vecond trial over that distance 'was
timed at 14.89 seconds for a speed
of 241.778 miles an hour. His av
erage time for both runs was 14.175
seconds for an average two way
speed of 252968 miles an hour.
The new record for the iaile ex
ceeded by 8.235 miles an hour the
former mark of 245.733 he estab
lished in the same car hers last
year.
On his first run, Campbell was
clocked over the one kilometer.
which is approximately 2,000 feet
less than a mile, at 8.53 seconds
for a speed of 262,242 miles an
hour. His time on the second trial
over that distance was 9.27 seconds
for a speed of ;241.308 miles an
hour. His average two way time
over the kllometer was 8,90 sec
onds for an average speed of
251.340 miles an hour.
Campbell's old mark for the one
kilometer was 246.086; for the mile
i 245.733 and for five kilometers
'216.045 miles an hour.
Because of a strong head wing,
Campbell sald he was greatly dis
~atisfled with his trials yesterday
and that if the wind subsides by
low tide today he should be able
to boost his ' records by a wide
margin.
itive menace to national weifare,

‘; “The purpose of this anti-hoard
ing campaign is twofold—to get
‘money, now hidden, into circula

of popular education as to. the
function of money, of banks, of
credit, and to show the disastrous
consequences when credit is re
stricted by money withdrawn from
