Apart from the two extremes of
those who take the literal and tra
ditional view and the 80-callad
“modernists” who believe that the
realities of Christian faith _and

{teaching do not depend upon the
ilitéra! acceptance of the stories of
miracles, we find twen attitudes or
ltompers. ¢
There are those whose attitudz
might be called that of material
' science, who seé everything in the
world operating within the realm
lof law, and of laws, the effects of
}wmch can be measured and stated
ii“ material terms. |

! But we see, also, intelligent men
’:md women who believe that the
| laws of the universe are not con.
fined to material effects that ecan!
be measured. They belleve that we.
‘}arr- in a world of spirit, and that
‘phenomena quite as remarkable 18
the miracles described in the New‘
iTe-slament are happening in t\-.n'
world today.
~ The conflict between these two
attitudes and tempers is exceed -
ingly keen, but it cannot be said
that the eminent and the intelligent
are wholly upon one side.
~ Such men as the late Conan
