Coulter recommended to all \vhuE
are’ interested in the facts con- |
cerning Oglethorpe to read Wil-l
Ham Stephens’ Diary. Wil]iaml
Stephens was a staunch defenderl
of the polities of the original
trustees who ruled that not_ over |
fifty acres of land should hei
granted to any one, and no slavesl
and no whiskey could be sold in!
the colonies. His son, Thomas|
Stéphens, severely criticized Ogle
thorpe and #ent to England and
tried to prevail on Parliament to
overrule the policies of Oglethorpe |
but Parliament upheld the rule of'
the trustees. Fieg
Mary Musgrove was another in-l
teresting person discussed. She |
was a famous Indian half-breed
and the speaker stated that she}
was a very good woman as long
as she was not under the influ
ence of a designing husband—
Mary had three husbands. i
Dr. Coulter mentioned there
were three governors under the‘
kings. The first ong, John Rey
nolds, a naval captain, came over
on a battleship, but was not popu
dar and the king recalled him. |
Later John Reynolds became an
@dmiral of the blue in the Britith |
navy. s |
Henry Ellis, an explorer, and
member of the London Scientific
Society, was liked very much but
due to ill health, at his own re
quest, was recalled after four or
five yeurs service. l
JSJames Wright, born in CHarles
ton, South Carolina, was the third
governor, and a very able man. At
the beginning of the Revolutionary
war he was arrested but allowed
to escape to ¥ngland on a ship,
where he was made a baronet and
became Sir James Knight. Later
he came back and was governor
again of Georgia.
The meeting was called to order
by Mrs. R. J. Turner, president,
who read a Thanksgiving poem on
Gratitude which embodied the
thought, “As a stream cannot rise
above its source, so the soul can
not rise above the quality of its
gratitude.” At the conclusion of a
short business session, a g/oup of
Southern songs were sung by
three of the members of the Glee
club of the College of Education,
with Mrs. J. W. Bailey accom
panist. Miss Mary Brooks, Miss
fi;u‘garvt Elliott and Miss Irene
Woodward were the young ladies
taking part.
The hostesses on this occasion
were: Mrs. L. H. Marlatt, Mrs. T.
F. Green,-Mrs. D. L. ' Earnest,
Mis. George Thornton, Mrs. J. C.
Meadows and Mrs. Arthur Gan
non. Hot tea was served with
several kinds of tasty sandwiches
made of Georgia produects.
