Sidney Fomewood, society riding master arnd Charlotte Ariel Gib
son, socially prominent, whom Hmewod has been convicted of seducing.
Homewood will be sentenced December 13. £
(By NEA SERVICE.)
NEW YORK.~A jury decided
that Charlotte Gibson, 23-year-old
unmarried mother-to-be, had been
betrayed ©by Sidney Homewood, |
society riding master, with unflll-’
ed promises of marriage.
Defense counsel pointed out that |
Miss Gibson was intelligent, well
read, and had been educated here
and abroad. Was it likely, it was
asked, that such a woman could
be so uninformed on the subject
of sex that she could be the victim |
of seduction as the law defines it'.’[
The jury said yes. Miss Gilnsun}
went to the Tappan, N. Y. home
of her parents to bear her child.
"Homewood will go to jail.

of them:

women would feel that a girl of
23 with the normal experiences of
lm’e is too mature for seduction.
'Of course, when an unborn child
enters into the situation, one must
consider thig human - tangle from
the' ¢hild's viewpoint as well as
the man and woman's. Although
money might help, a jail sentence
never could, One feels that this is
a situation which should have been
stttled out of court.” i

Are the attentions of'a girl less

“It is not my place to criticize
a verdict that already has been
reached in the courts, nor—since
sentence has not been pronounced
—to comment on what would bhe
just punishment for a man con

been. ¢
“It is true, of course, that Wo
men of Charlotte Gibson's years
may be of widely varying ages in
worldly knowledge. T
“But it is also true that in the
vast majority of cases, a woman
of 23 is intelligent on subjects of
sex, and would realize the dangers
of any such relationship as that
involved in this instance.” s
