gations from the public buildin
funds. i
He said, however, that this di
not necessarily mean permaner
abandonment of the building pro
jecte which would have been pai
for out of the fund.
The administration’s move wa
described by Douglas as “a tempo
rary stop order” to give the gov
ernment a chance to plan a coordl
nated program for relief of unem
- ployment.
Cost $250,000,000
Douglas estimated it would cos
about $250,000 to finance the pro
pored civilian conservation corp:
for a vear, but that the $40,000,001
" would finance it for the remainde
" of this fiscal year.
The administration is now work:
ing on a large range and complet:
relief program, together with plans
% for financing it, Douglas sald.
Chairman Connery of the house
lahor committee asked if the pro
jecis from which the funds have
been withdrawn would be aban
doned.
Douglas said most of them prob
ably would be “covered in the com
plete and coordinated program now
heing worked out,”
Questioned by members of the
committee, Douglas, said the ad
ministration had stopped making
contracts for all public works not
already contracted for,
Predicts Passage
Meanwhile representative Byrns
of Tennessee, the Democratic leader,
told newspapermen ‘“the house wil
- pass the President’s employmem
bill Monday or Tuesday.”
' He said Chairman Conner of the
house labor committee, who opposes
the $1 a day pay for “conservation
corps” workers, had assured hlm
that committee would “bring out
some kind of a bill Monday morns
irg.”
“] expect the bill we pass will be
just about like the President pro
posed,” Byrns continued.
“If the committee changes it ma
terially, the action of the house De
moeratic: majority will depend on
the President’s attitude.’
