More Than 43,000
Ga. Farmers Have
Asked For Loans
| More than 43,500 Georgia f;u‘m-l
ers had applied to the wvegional
crop production loan omce' ut’
Washington, D. C., for loans inl
the first four months of 1933, ac- |
cording to figures released froml
the offices of the Georgia Agricul- |
tural Extension Service. Four dis-l
trict men of the Agricultural |
Service are in ‘Washington ~hand
ling these applications, which arel
still coming in rapicdly.
The crop production leans were
initiated as an emergency meas
ure of the government for giving
relief to storm stricken or drought
stricken areas, but in the last two |
‘years the ' service has been ex- !
tended to the entire country as ui
farm relief measure. In 1932 Geor
gia farmers sent in approximate
ly 45,000 applications. This year
it is estimated by Harry Brown of |
the Extension . Service that the |
application will reach 65,000 sim'e‘
43,671 had come in by April 1. i
The maximum crop production |
Yoan to a farmer is S3OO. The uv-!
erage of the loans to Georgia far- |
mers so far this year has “beén
$92 per application. The govern
ment takes a crop mortgage when
it makes the loan, the crop csrv-}
jng as the oniy collateral. I
The farmers on thier .Joan ap
plications present a program of |
balanced -crop ~ production. "The!
applications are in better shape
than ever before so far as cmp-l
ping plans and acreage production
are concerned,” Mr. Brown de
clares. “They indicate that Geo:-’
gia farmers aré developing a much
bhetter balanced system of tarm-‘
ing.” :
