Wednesday, Phillips folmes,
young bprodigy of the screen, and
Diana Wynward portray a ro
mance that has been moved up to
1940 and . you get a glimpse at
what is predicted in love and ro
mance for that year, seven years
in advance. The title is “Men
Must Fight.”
For Thursday and Friday,
Walter Houston and Karen
Morley come in a picture that
had electrified audiences all
over, ,Amt;yicu,“ y “Gabriel Over
the Whitehouse,” - This is a
picture that i quite different
from the ordinary run of pic
tures and is one that will hold
the interest of the audience
from beginning to end. Mickey
Mouse and his friends, and
enemies, wil be along also.
Saturday, James Dunn and Sally
Rilers present the “Sailors’ Luck.”
Sally is the “bgd girl of Broad
way” and in this picture ‘she’s
mixed up with a lot of sailors and
you can imagine that she's still

follows the fate of Jolly John and.
Harrie with deeper satire and
more uproarious effect than the
author’s first book, “Rackety~
BRax.”
| Ogden Nash has said that “Hiz
‘zoner the Mayor” is the “Bronxiest
cheer in ages, proving ribaldly
that however you slice, it's still
the Mayor,” and his description
fits the book like a glove. Wheth
er Mr. Sayre is taking off Jimmy

ithinks not) is immaterial to the
sheer fun of the book. ‘“Hizzoner
the Mayor” is an uproariously
funny jab in the ribs. .
It’'s hard to pick out any par
ticular part of the book to show
just how amusing it is. A Malta
citizen files a petition with the
governor asking that Malta city
administration be investigated. One
of the bosses comments: “He says,
‘Dr. Chester Tingley is grosslv
unfitted to be superintendent of
schools, having almost no cultu
ral background himself.’ What the
hell does he expect from a chi
|ropodist? . = . "What does he ex
pect, hand-painted china?”
~And if that doesn’t strike your
sense of humor there's the mys
terious pony murders. Something
like eighty city officials are dis
covered in places ranging from

That was to see whether a pony’'s
kick is as strong in the water as
on land. No satisfactory result
was obtained except that the po
nies caugnt pneumonia and died.
But for the most part the hu
mor in “Hizzoner the Mayor'"
cannot be quoted. Theére is no -at~
tempt to be funny; no strain to
make a joke; this book is a “hat
ural” in more ways than. one. If
you laugh at the trend govern
ment has taken, if you can laugh
at yourself, for Mr. Sayre makes
fun of the tax-payers a 8 well as
well as the officials, then don't
miss “Hizzoner the Mayor.” And
if you've forgetten how to laugh,
read it and regain your sense of
humor, :
If nothing else in the volume
makes you laugh the ending will—
if it doesn’t you might as well pull
the covers up over your head and
snore it off.
