BANNER-WATCHMAN. EDWIN R. KINNF.HREW, Titviiim Auknt SUBSCRIPTION: . terVear ULUBS OF TEN ........ CLVBS OF TWENTY.. Clearing Abe’* Record. WVsfc...„ cjWV, Much has been said about the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Enemies have said that he was an illegitimate child. Dr. C. C. Graham, of Kentucky, a man who lacks but two yearn of Ailing a century of time, has made the tollowiug oath on that point. Those who know Dr. Gra ham , will And no trouble In believing his statement, which is as follows: 1. Christopher C. Graham, now of * Louisville, Ky., aged 98 years, on my oatli say: That I was present at the marriage of Thomas Lincoln and Xancy Hanks, in Washington county, near the town of Springfield, Ky.; that one Jess e Head, a Methodist preaelier or Spring field, Ky., performed the ceremony. 1 knew the said Thomas Lincoln and Nan cy Hanks well, and know the said Nancy Hanks to have been virtuous and re spectable and of good parentage. I do not remember the exact date of the mar riage, hut was present at the marriage aforesaid; and I make tills affidavit free ly and at llieiequest of J. W. Wartinan, to whom for the first time I have this day incidentally stated the fact of my presence at the said wedding of Presi dent Lincoln's father nml mother. 1 make this affidavit to vindicate tlie character of Thomas Lincoln and Na'.iey Hanks, and to put to rest forever the le gitimacy of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, i was forn.erly proprietor of Harrods- burgSprings; I am a rutired physician and aui now a resident of Louisville, Ky. I think Felix Grundy was also present at the marriage of Said Thomas Lincoln and Nancy llnnks, the father and moth er of Abraham Lincoln. The said Jesse Head, the officiating minister tit the marriage aforesaid, afterwards moved to Tinrrodsburg, Ky., and edited a paper there, and died at. this place. ClIlllSTorllKK CoLUMBl'S GllXHAM. Subscribed and sworn to before me, this, March 20th, A. D. 1882. [Seal] N. CJ. Bcti.kk, Clerk U. S. Circuit Court 1st Hist. In diana. By J. W. Whitman, P C. Revenue Laws. Trade Journal. The revenue tinkers have begun tlieir work, and, ns usual, have shown an uatounding development of ears. If there are any two articles of domestic production upon which we may justly and consistently levy heavy tux, those articles are whisky and tobacco. Both are emphatically luxuries, and of a kind for which consumers should lie made to pay well. To ho sure, whisky —or rather alcohol—lias its uses in manufactures and the arts; hut Us prime and principal use is to degrade and defile mankind. Tobacco is a less harmful luxury, hut one upon which n heavy tax may he levied with per- teot consistency. As to that vile abomination, cigarettes, we are satis fied that a proposition to impose a tax of $1 on every one manufactured would lie met with wild enthusiasm by the masses. In the mutter of malt liquors —possibly one barrel out of every ten thousand is used for medicinal pur poses; the other 9,999 are devoted to the work of brutalizing humanity. Tills being the case, and we do not fear contradiction, we sincerely pity the discernment of that sub-commit tee who recommended a sweeping re duction of tlie taxes upon tlie articles we have mentioned. For our part, we would be glad to see the greater part of the revenues of the general govern ment tlerivod from taxes on tobacco whisky and malt liquors. But so long ns sundry members of Congress retain their “lower ward” characteristics, we may look for cordial support for any legislation calculated to produce cheap whisky. 1 BOOTS AND SHOES.
