H H Carlton, of Clarke, we proposed th» gentleman’s name for Congressman from the State at large. Although our pars, graph waa coucheil in hnt few Jinea, and saa simply thrown out as a suggestion, it wa^at once aeiced upon l>y both the proas and people, who heartily seconded our nomination. .We never saw such a spontaneous, unsolicited uprising in fa vor of a candidate. Papers from every section of the State, at once committed themselves to this gentleman, hv giving their unqualified endorsement, spoken in the moot flattering language. Not only in our owh immediate section, hot from nearly every part of Georgia, has Dr. Carlton been solicited, aye urged, by the people to permit the use’ of his name, we a few days since called at Dr.' Carlton’s office, and after speaking of the flattering manner in which the sim ple mention of his name had been re ceived, asked if he would not i* i nit ns to officially announce his name as a can didate for Congress from the State at large—adding that we did so at the in stance of a number of leading citizens in tills and adjacent counties, besides our own desire to be the first to propose name that we knew would reflect honor upon the Democracy of Georgia, and which every index |>ointed to aa the al most unanimous choice of the people. I>r. Cahi.Ton expressed gratification at the compliment his friends thus paid him, and stated that he had nu t jiersons from diflVrent sections of tlie State who urged that he pprmit the use of his name in that connection. The Doctor said that he had no political ambition—‘in fact had made tip his mind to devote his time in the future to the practice of his profession—that he had no disposition to again enter politics, and would not go into a scramble for office; but if the Democracy of Georgia felt that with his name they could gain a victory, and- it was their wish that he represent the State at large in the National Congress lie would certainly esteem it a high hon or, and if the nomination is tendered him by the Democratic Convention he would accept the high trust and lend every aid in his power to carry victory, and if elect ed it would be his highest ambition to represent the entire State of Georgia. Dr. Carlton places his name at the service of his friends. Hon. H. II. Cari.tox is no stranger to the people of Georgia. During ids term of service in the Legislature he made a reputation as a law-maker and a states man that won for him the adm.ration of not only his own people, but the entire country. His labor was not confined to our section, but he was the representa tive and champion of the entire .State. Some of the greatest reforms and moves since the war eminated from this gentle man. We fee' not a shadow of doubt about bis success. 5 s’! s o 2 2II* s w sr gen sac-* ..so CO | w r 2! tN? 1013 iQtS isi* foil s n Ir * -Ico ■ i C} I. c •3 jigifp C - Hf|r\»E3l2 mAi iSdffWII iiiOisr&wiS ipdibQlSil ri«rD^H5f<2o 1 r W J1 V^¥^: S ! Hi o f cm- l j A BOOM FOR RABUN. To the Editor of the Watehmnu :—I am glad to see that you are endeavoring to show who is responsible for the disgrace ful appointment of a negro postmaster at Athens. 1 hope you will continue to investigate the matter, and expose all who had influence in causing such a dis graceful appointment to the people. I-et us know how our Senators voted on the confirmation of the appointment. Why do not your people meet in public, and pass resolutions denouncing it with the utmost contempt. If they are disposed to put us under negro government, and force social and official equality with negroes, it may be that we can find some cranky Guiteaii in these mountains that will go to Washington and show him the rood that Garfield lately traveled.
