nhgf BANNER-WATCHMAN. OFFICIAL ORGAN OF CITY AND COUNTY SUBSCRIPTION, «1 SO PER YEAR IN ADVANCE. ussesi mccuTOi ra northeast beobbil Barnes, the Kentucky revivalist, llevcs that there are hones in heav be- •ven. YANOEY, CRANFORD * GANTT PROP'R8. T. L~ GANTT, Edjtor. THEOLD BOUTEFEU OF THE NINTH *" AVo can always tell’ when the Banner- Watchman makes a centre shot in the Inilepcmlont-Railionl-Niggor-Sopporting ranks, from the yelp that ascends from _ Mr. Speer's henchman in Oalncsvillo. In his last Issue this old, imported, self- constitiitcd political Moses from Yan- kcedom very kindly (lives us a whole page of Ids journalistic guano jjack, which w ill average at least ten slander ous misrepresentations to the column— which we have already branded in our paper as false and defied refutation. We cannot afford to waste more space in replying to the wild ravings of a man vliose very bread depends upon serving a man and party to whom he has sold himself for a petty little office. Our course in the late riot has secured the endorsement of every man in Athens— mile-** he is a follower of Mr. Si-kick or is tied to the apron s'rings of the State University and is afraid to breathe lest the zephyr that escapes from his lips might bring discredit upon this institu- tutlon—and is the endorsement of these citizens that we seek, and not such im ported old renegades and political lepers as the boulrfeu of the Gainesville South ron, who has come down South preg nant with all the prejudices and bitter ness of the most Itadlcal clement at the North, and is now trying to undermine and disrupt the party that lias so val- liantly wrested Georgia and tiie South from thoso thieving carpet-baggers, scalawags and ltndicals, and restored the government to tlio white race; and to nccnmplish his vile end this man Lawshe is gathering to Ills fold the most ignorant and depraved element, amon our population.lie Is,moreover, appealing to race issues, and encourages the black to bitterness and hatred tow ards theft- former masters. What docs Petek Law- v . h. wvns, sue know of the political needs of onr people!? The position he is attempting to assume as leader of a Southern Demo cratic party would bring the blush of adinnte to tlie check of a brass monkey. ]|is Democracy may do very well in the wilds of Minnesota, but when he crosses .Mason and Dixon’s line bis principles analyze the blackest species of Radical ism. The corrupt reign of the Republi can party in Georgia pales Into insignifi cance wlicn compared to tl:o mission ot the Gainesville Southron. And further more, in his frantic attempt to impeach our course in regard to the inuruer of voung Roundtree this man J.awsIik sloops to ends so dishonorable that we cannot see liow he dares to show his face among the brotherhood of the Fonrtj, Kstntc. lie garbles disjointed and dis connected extracts from our editorials, communications and exchanges, anil en deavors to distort and use them to our detriment—omitting every line that ex plains our language. But he lias over stepped bis mark, and any intelligent man who has read our paper can sec nt a glance ids dishonorable ends. The Post-Ap|ieal is trying very hard to convince somebody that the Bourbons aro making a canvass of “ personal abuse and attacks upon (Independent) private character”—tills in spite of the fact, that it knows there is not a word of truth in Its assertions, and that the con trary is the truth—and we have only to refer to tlio scurrilous articles of Felton, Farrow and Speer to. substantiate our charge. It sccins to have been the re sult of conference and etinens diction that that these leaders of the coulition-inde- pendcnt-rcpiiblican party was to meet agrnincnt by abuse and to divert atten tion from facts by attacks on tlio private characters of some of our best and most respectable citizens. But whack away, Marcellas! the syndicate, it seems, Is “ busted,” (sec P.-A. April 18) and we can promise yon that your lilicral-coali- tion-independent party will e’er long meet with the same fate. You are too fresh from tlm “ swill tub” to convince the honest voters of tills country that their leading men and papers are guilty of your charge. The Oglethorpe correspondent of the Constitution v. us mistaken in in Urina ting that Hon. If. 11. C-rlton was in that county .electioneering for Congressman at large. The Doctor was there on profes sional business, and the ovation inhisbe- hnlf was tlio spontaneous, unsolicited uprising of the people. lie is not an of fice-seeker, but will serve Ids Stale if wanted ns viilliantly in Congress ps be slid on llu* llclds of battle. If Congressman Emory Speer could only secure the appointment of Repub lican, to office in the Oth, why did he i ,ot select some good white men from Villon or other North Georgia counties, who served in the Federal army during •the late war, ns they felt it their duly to ■do so? Such an appointment would liavo been entirely acceptable to our people. The Post-Appeal see me to lie aroused by the *' Yeu-tickle-me-I-tieklc-yoii” tendency of some of the aspirants for office. Now, Marcellos is down on this style of procedure since it failed to work /smoothly. in the recent Markham House caucus. It seems the Col. did not get Iiis share of the “tickling." To promote the ambition of a brilliant young orator, arc the wliito people the Oth district willing to sacrifice the self-govcrn nent so nobly recovered by the Organized Democracy, and agnin turn this country over to negro rule? We pause for a reply. The bitterest Radical paper in Yan- kecdom never inculcated and encouraged such Incendiary doctrine, or showed more bitter hatred to the white people of the South, than does the Gainesville * Southron—tlio organ of Mr. Emory Speer. Judge Alex. Irwin will be the next standard bearer of the Democracy in the 9tli district. The people are a unite for Jilin, anil the Judge can’t resist the pres sure. He will prance into office on the shoulders of 5,000 majority. Arc wo to judge front the remark 9 in ' the Post-Appeal about the “ Bourbon’ editorials on the recent homicide in Athens, that the Post-Appeal is in sym pathy with Ihe editorial in -the “ Defi- auoe," of a few days ago. It is now said that Brown, Colquitt & Co. aro exhibiting Grady through the State, with a vlow of foisting him on the people as Congressman at large. We admire Grady, but don’t like the way ho is being spread on. Lawshe speaks of **decent papers." If his standard is baaed on the Southron, wo would add that this class of journals ought to bo quoted in the U.S. Diapen- aatA-y among otlter emetics. Thefkh is tho only district in Georgia • filled with negro office holders—and our people are represented by an Indepen dent Congressman. Put this fact in your jflipc and suioko it. *, Gov. Crittenden has pardoned the Ford brothers, bat they are still In jail at St. Joseph, and will have to be con veyed under guard to some safe place. Our Rabun letter In fcodu fide—but Lawshe did not have the justice to say that we reproved the tone of the writer. As to the author’s name, It is none ol Pete's business-. Tin- white Indies and gentlemen of Athens have.now to apply io a colored delivery clerk for their mails. Now ain’tth'is sorter piling on the agony? And vet Mr. Sjieer’r Imnd-organ has ground otfl the confewon*M«1ts 1ms could have had Dr.Orrre-appoiiitedhad lie seen fit. The wholesale appointment of colored office-holders, to the entire exclusion of the whites, Ims placed the leaders of the Independent party in the 9th district exactly where they belong—sqnarly in the middle of the Radical ranks. That assumed name of Independent Democ racy lias vanished into mist, and the vile ends of the party brought plainly to view. The Nneooeh' e correspondent of the Clarkesville Advertiser says: “It is nil quiet along the banks of the Chatta- liooche" at present in regard to poli tics. \Ye think that Mr. Speer’s most anient admirers hAVe found, to theft: sorrow, that that very iioxoraiilk gentleman lias long since been "weigh ed in tlie balances and found traili ng,” and that things are not what they scent. An Indian Peace Pipe.—A gentle man in Athens has a large Indian pipe, plowed up at Keull Shoal and weighing several pounds. It is in the exact shape of a crow, and shows that this race possessed great skill in the art sculpture, even with the crude im plements at their command. INSURANCE.' FIRE INSURANCE! J. A. GRANT.
