Earnest Morris, the young trav eler and naturalist, who has just return ed from Brazil, repeat* the general ob servation ol explorers that the exnraber- ances of insect life is the principal obsta cle to the enjoyment of a sojourn in that part of the world. Cockroaches swarm in every house despite the inroads of an army of spiders which sally forth from every chink to prey upon them; scorpi ons are intrusive and dangerous; a small red insect called the “meeium" is an in tolerable annoyance; at certain hours of the day the air is black with flies and mosquitos; ami ants are a universal plague. To baflle these last named foes of peace Mr. Morris was obliged to keep his entire collections on hanging shelves, the cords of which were soaked in the oil of copaiba. “The most destructive ant in Brazil,” says Mr. Morris, “is the sanlia. It will strip trees of their foliage in a single night, and in many places orange trees cannot be grown for this reason. The tocandeira is a very large ant, the bite of which is poisouous and makes a painful sore. I was once una ble to work for a week from n bite re ceived from one of these ants. Some species travel in large bodies, marching in straight line and never turning to the right or left. If a house lies in riie track of one of these marching bislws. unless they are completely exterminated they will pass through. Nothing will be injured, but every crack and cranny will be explored, and not a cockroach or spi der will survive the visitation. They are, therefore, regarded as friends, atid their advent is always welcomed. Oo where you will in Brazil, yon will meet ants. You live, sleep and eat with them —and eat them, too.” THE VERY LATEST~NEWS. Fred Grant is mixed up with the elec tric light swindle. Three negroes were banged in Green' vilie, Saturday, for ursoti. A Minnesota man was lynched for rape upon a four-year-old child. The tower ofSeney hall, Emory col lege, will be one hundred feet high. Gen. Thirty-one murders have been commit ted in Pittsylvania county, Virginia, since July 1, 1815, and only one man hung. The boiler of a steamer on the Wateree river, S. From corrected data, prepared by thoae in charge of the nautical almanac, it is learned that the new comet’a near est approach to the earth will he in the latter part of May. The comet will reach its pcrilielian on June 12. It will not bo visible to the naked eye before the 10th of May. It gives indications of being very large. It will first appear in tlio north, about thirty degrees above the hoiison, about eight o’clock in the evening. The increase of brilliancy will probably be very marked from May 25tli to June 12th, but the comet will proba bly be lost to sight in the sunlight about June lOih, and will lie visible only to the southern hemisphere.
