BANNER-WATCHMAN. OFFICIAL ORGAN Of CITY AND COUNTY ■UBSCRimON, |1 SO PER TEAK IN ADVANCE. UEBBT QECUUT10I U KHtTHEAST 6E0KBIA. YANCEY. OIIANFORD * QANTT PROP'RS. T. L. OANTT, Editor D38BRT1NO A SINKING SHIP. By reference loan iutervlew with Mr, Smith Clayton in another column, ta ken from the Conititution, it will bo Been that lie hurt severed hia connection with tliat Miirkham house coalition move ment and giv<‘s his reasons for so doing; mid his arguments against the gang, too, or so clear uni] satisfaciodr that no one can for an instant doubt Mr. Ci ayton’h sincerity. Ho has discovered the fact argued liy tills paper since its first issue —that any po'iliealnrgsnijtatien in Geor gia or the South combating ihe«Tsaiii»Hl democracy is formed for the solcpurjiose of elevating a lew ambitions nod unscru pulous men to office l»y Africeniaing this section and selling it to tin* rcpuldican party. SsiTIiCuytus was bovn and retired » sotttlir u, and has most gal lantly declined to lend hi* name or aid to por;s'trate this in.amy. And there are to-day tlioiisands of men in Georgin and llie ninth district who will follow in his footsteps. We want- every white man in the nintli district to read the scathing es|s»sc from tills gcntlenian of that coalition movement—sisihen by one who knows the workings of tlds in famous ring—and then if he can vote so-called independent ticket he is either blinded to person d preference, is inca pable of thinking for him“elf or is an enemy to the section in which lie was born ami raised. The Bans hit-Watch man was the first ;>a)s.T in Georgia to sound iis note of warning ag.iin-t lids vil'ainoiis scheme to radicalise and ne- groiae Georgia, as so ably and truly ex- pum-d by Mi. Clayton. A ml let os fur ther impress upon our readers that Mi Emolv Nckkr Is now hanrt-aod-glovi aililiiv.ingwithtliis ncwi nviveinent.as will be seen by the ,'ollowing peragiaph, ink- ea from the Atl inla the organ of Dr. Felton’s new party: The avalanche of sentiment in favor of Hon. Emory Speer is growing dally. He will bo ptesent at the mass meeting on the first of June. It is a duty the while men of the ninth district owe themselves, their families and their country that they band to gether and avert the blow aimed at onr institutions and onr rights. An inde pendent victory nest fall means radical ism in iis deepest dye and a government ruled oy negroes. We are now receiv ing but a taste of what ts in sice for us should this party succeed. Its suc cess sounds the death-knell to white in premacy. We are no alarmist, but ask any thinking man to cast his eye upon the prostituted offices and miserable state of affairs In our own district hut to be convinced of its truth. Mr. Cla v ton’s expose must carry with it convic tion to the heart of every true south erner. Onr next campaign will not sim ply be drawn on party lines, hut it is svniggle between the Caucasian and the African for pollticr 1 supremacy in Georgia. Reed the decla:aiion of every negro convention yei iie'd and this fact is made apparent. This race endorses and pledges Us support to any move ment looking to the overthrow oi de mocracy—aid we all know that organ ized detnoci acy means government by the while tace. It la folly for our peo ple to longer seek the enloieil vo.e. It held at the bidding of the administra tion in Washington, and it is boldly pledged to these politicians who have undertaken the task of radicalizing the State. The negro vole is a wlli-o’-tlie- »U.llMA-jllA-»r« liUfMAWlM' 1 - "*'*■»r- — grasp tratli the day or election alien it disappears into the republican party. The next campnign will be fought on simply the issue of the white man vs. the black man—and on that day the man or candidate not found in the dem ocratic ranks will carry with him to tiie grave the isiinm of selling his iieedom and piwer to the enemies of ills country through the hope of promotion. , Guiteau, Felton’s new movement and the revised New Testament seem to have dropped entirely out of the public mind of late. Iu reply to a squib copied in the Post Appeal, we will say that the gen tlemen in Athens who went on Post master Davis’ bottd did so to save the office front the rule of certain radicals and scalawags in Atlanta, who were ready to lend their names to control the appointees in the Interest of their P“riy. Our first information was incorrect. We have now documents In ottr pos sesion to show conclusively that Con gressman Speer did endorse the ap pointment of Postmaster Davis, and his letters are most sickening in their praise of tills colored office-holder. He seems to have been playing a double- handed game with his aspiring color ed constituents. Mr. Speer, in a recent speech in con gress. spoke of election frauds in the south. Noto can tills gentleman deny that at the Inst contest in this district lie stopped n gentleman who was go ing to the court-house to challenge illegal voters, and appealed to his per sonal friendship and prevailed upon hint not t.) do so? We do notsuppoae a man in Georgia is hacked hy more illegal votes titan tills same Mr. Emory Sjieer. Remarking upon the tendency to compare Emerson and Carlyle, the Philadelphia Bulletin says: “Unlike Ca -lyle, to whom fashion persists in comparing hint, lie was gentle and not bound up in seif esteem; nor did he, like the Scotchman, preach excellence In public and practice selffshness and tyranny lit private. His was the true nohlUty, the well rounded life.’’ But the Emerson was not afflicted by “that diabolical contrivance called u stom a-lie." We think the editorials in the Con stitution on Mr. Stephens’ candidacy are wholly unnecessary, as that gen tleman, if we understood aright, is announced to run as a democrat— which of course means subject his claims to a convention of the party. Mr. Stephens knows as well as any of us that a latter-day independent can not be classed as a democrat, since the hideous expose of the mission of that party. If the “great commoner’’is not nominated he will not lie In the field. Mr. Speer’a speeches in congress are spoken of by the critic* as fine dis plays of sophomore oratory; bat they are perfectly Insipid, and have never been known to carry conviction with them. "Hie limpid waters of mad creekand the granite-crowned summit of hog-back mountain kissed by the gilding rays of the setting sun” have nothing to do with great national Is sues. And yet these spread-eagle bursts of eloquence, seasoned with a few free packages of garden seed, are all the result reaped by the people of .the ninth district. Not counting those Jtja^k pfBet-hoJdtlf. MR. STEPHENS' CAfeoiDACY, Wo have just seen a gentleman from Atlanta, who tells us that it Is mi ac cepted fact that Mr. BTEPtrigs's Is the coalition candidate for governor, afei that he is making the race in the In terest of that party. This we do not and cannot believe; nndyet if wc were, convinced of the feet we would ,as soon touch a leper as support hfs claims. We think the report grjttwl credence from the feet that Mr. Ste phens is earnestly supported by tlie in dependent press, who doubtless think by so doing to give a respectability to their movement that nothing else csn. Mr. Stephens announces thnt he will nin as a democratic jettndidale, and surely he cannot mean l^y this an es pousal of or even eonipminise wi.h the coalitionists. His langua'.e win plain and explicit, and permits of no other interpretation than that he is willin'! to flOHSTT, WintitKAS Rebecs* Gulp, (luaoli-.n ortber minor son o ^psffijjjjjss These are focrcfgre to notify all concerned to . ihow cause at mjflttSco on or before thc.H.-st Monday U\.hme oexl whv wild leave s.iopld not be (.wanted, Given nndsr my hand at office.. this 2l»t dav u( April, IRvJ. 447-i!S0i ’ ASA M. Three days before that a white man was hung at Minne apolis, Minnesota, and three days be fore that a white man was ltung at Greenesburg, Indiana. In each ot these instances the parties were hung without regard to law or order. The purchaser of an old house at Ed gar’s Ferry, Ky., saw that the floor in one spot was nailed down far more se curely than any where else. Curiosity led him to remove the hoards. Under neath was a small mound of earth, from which he dug out the bones of three humau beings. It is believed that a dead and gone occupant of the house was a murdere- of travelers.
