The report of smalt-pox being In Litho- nia is denied. Ireland has dubbed Parnell her “ un crowned king.” Quiet has again been restored among the Indians out west. In the 8tar Route irial, Bob Ingersoll gave George Bliss the lie. There were two deaths from small-pox but no new cases in Atlanta, Thursday. Major Bellamy, near Quitman, has 10,000 acres of land in cultivation. An Atlanta auctioneer bought an alliga- gator for 50 cents and sold it to a north erner for $200. A 16-year-old boy tried to shoot a school-girl, in St. Paul, and then blew his own brains out because she would not elope with him. Pleasants has been confirmed as col lector at Savannah. Newton for post master at Brunswick and Arnold for post master at Columbus are suspended from consideration until Senator Brown shall return. At the gate of the cemetery at Avig non, in France, the parents of n child certified to have died of croup, insisted on having the coffin opened to have a last look. The child was found to be breathing, and was expected to be saved. Since the colored convention at Macon friends of the syndicate in Washington are giving out reports that the colored voters of Georgia are solidified in snpport of the new movement, and they offer this us the omen of their success to the ad ministration. V Opelika, Alabama, is the pre-ent scene of much disturbance. Faction feeling is at its height. It culminated on Thurs day by the shooting of two policemen. The bitter feeling in the town lias been brewing since last month when the municipal eUction was declared illegal. The result of all this is two sets of of ficers, each claiming jurisdiction and each ready to fight for It. Dahlonkga, May 2.—Court adjourned Saturday. Bell has been sentenced to bang 23d. William DotsCn, who was found guilty on circumstantial evidence of burning a whisky warehouse is sent three years to the cliaiu-gaug. The Fishtrap gold mine, one mile south of here, bus been sold to a new company from New York ior a good sum, and some ten thousand dollars has been paid »'P- Five hundred miners at the Pratt mines, Alabama, are on a strike on ac count ot a proposed redaction of ten Jier cent. STUBBS, Jons k oauxktt, August 23. 1881. General Fritxhngh Lee, the son ot the Confederate commander, is diligently at work on n “ History of the Army of Northern Virginia.” State Librarian Haralson is mailing the senate journal to the memtiers of the senate and house, and to the eounty of ficials who are entitled to it. Washington gossip hints at a disagree ment and coldness between the l’r dent and Gen. Grant, owing to the fail ure of the former to invite the latter’s friend, Gen. Beale, toa cabinet position. Senator Joseph E. Brown reached At lanta Thursday morning much improved “> A—Uh—.He will r«Baisu»-**-—"'v n few days and then go to Greenville, S. C., to he in attendance upon the Baptist convention In that place, after which he will return to Washington. Cxdahvillk. O., May 4.—The saloon of Con. Sweeney was blown . up by dy namite this morning. Sweeney and his children were blown out of lied hut not r> rlouslv hurt. The building was week- ed. The temperance people recently threatened todestroy every saloon in the town. A letter from the secretary of the treasury was laid liefore the senate show ing that the total amount of internal revenue tax collected on raw cotton from the time the tax was imposed in 1802, until it was repealed In 1868, including that received from all the states and ter ritories, was $li8,072,3S8.9!t. There i* considerable talk in Wash- ton to the efl'ect that it is the purpose of the republican party in the coming congressional elections to make a strong effort, to capture tjuite a num ber of the congressional districts of the south. It Is said that in those states where her** are indications of an independent movement, if the in dependents uad republicans will unite and agree upon a line of policy to be pursued, the president 1ms prom ised to aid them to the fullest extent by the use of federal patronage. Seuator Hill's friends think that he will not be able to live the year out. it seems that the senator has had very little hope of favorable re sults from treatment, owing to the fact that he was attacked by a disease which he inherited, and which has carried off a brother, u sister and two aunts. The senator’s brother, Dr. Hill, died of cancer in the stomach, and his sister was attacked very tnuclt as he had been, by «t concer on the cheek, both resulting fatally. In reply to our Oconee correspond ent to-day, will state that with the ex ception of the Bth district, very few col ored office-holders have been appoint ed in Georgia—certainly none of any prominence. At the proper time we wlH convince any skeptical man that Mr. Emory Speer is $olrly rttpotuible for this affliction in our own district, as we have documentary evidence to that ef fect lu our possession. The question to be settled at the next election is sim ply this—must the African or the Cuu- cassian rule Georgia? Allooc&’a Porous Plasters?
