THE NEW BISHOPS.
The principal busluessof public in
terest accomplished by the general
conference of the Methodist Episcopal
church, south, now in quadreunial
session in Nashville Teun., was the
election, last afternoon, of five new
bishops, to replace three deceased
members of the Episcopal office and
meet the demands of the growing-
work in the hands of bishops of the
church. A telegram received in the
Evening News office last evening front
from our home delegate, Rev. H. H.
Parks, was too late for publication
yesterday, but, in addition to this in
formation, we give to-day interesting
and brief sketches of the new bishops
elect;
Rev. Alpheus W. Wilson, D, D., Is
a native of Maryland, and a member
of the Baltimore conference. He is
about 62 years of age. Was for four
years pastor of the Southern Metho
dist church in Washington City, and
for tiie last four years missionary sec
retory of the church; lias recently
published a “History of Missions.”
He is of a remarkable pulpit ability;
broad, strong, probing, always down
to principles, without tricks of ora
tory or semblance of sensationalism—
a hater ot sham. He is, in some re
gards, the ablest man in tho southern
Methodist church.
Rev. John C. Granberry, D. D., is
about 64 years of age. He is a native
of Viiginia, and a member of the Vir
ginia conference. For several years
lie lias lieen a professor of Theology in
Vanderbilt university. He is a fine
preacher, a man of HClioiarly attain
ments and of great personal populari
ty. Specimens of his sermons may
be found in tile “Methodist Pulpit
South,” published in 1858, when I)r.
(1. was still n young man.
Rev. Attlcus Green Haygood, P. D.
is a Georgian. He was horn near Wat-
kinsvillo, in February, 18.10, was grad
uated at Emory college, and immedi
ately joined the Georgia conference.
At tiie division of the conference in
1 Still, he held to the Nortli Georgia
confeience, of which he has been a
member ever since. He has served
in tiie pastorate, the presiding elder
ship, as general .Sunday school editor
and secretary, ns editor of the Wes
leyan Christian Advocate, nnd ns pres
ident of Emory eoltege. Dr. Haygood
lias lieen a voluminous writer, chiefly
for church periodicals. He has pub
lish pamphlets on “ljenomi national
Education,” on “Missions,” on the
“Pmhibition of the Tariff in Ardent
Spirits,” anil on "Christian Citizen
ship,” nnd is the author of two nota
ble volumes—“Our Children" and
“Our Brother in Black.” He is an
able preacher, a fine platform speak
er, a pointed, forcible writer. He is
a progressive man, full of energy and
enterprise. It was mainly through his
influence that Georgia b .fame the re
cipient of the christiau liberality of
Mr. George I. Seney, of Brooklyn.
He lins been, since December, 1876,
president of Emory college.
Rev. R. K. Hargrove, D. D., is a
Tennesseean, nnd a member of the
Tennessee conference. He is about
50 years of ago. Dr. Hargrove is an
able preacher, having filled the most
important positions in his conference,
in both the pastorate and presiding
eldership. He is a forcible writer,
his contributions to church periodi
cals having attracted much attention
in ail sections of the union. He is a
man of tine personal appearance and
popular manners. He is conserva
tive, strong, prudent—a wise counsel
lor and an earnest worker.
Rev. Linus Parker, D. D., is from
New Orleans. He has been for sev
eral years editor-in-chief of the New
Orleans Christian Advocate. Dr.
Parker is an excellent preacher, with
great finish of style, nnd an elegant,
forcible writer. In 'scholarship he,
perhaps, ranks all of the new bishops
except Dr. Granberry. He is of con
servative, rather than aggressive
type—an eminently safe man. Dr.
Parker is probably 54 or 55 years old.
