BANNER-WATCHMAN. yUESDAY, JUNK 8, 1882. OFFICIAL QBGAW OF CITY ANDCOUNTY SUBSCRIPTION, »1» PR%YRAR IN ADVANCE. LiECEST CttCPLiHOIU IQBTEMST bEOEGU. YANCEY. CRANFORD A GANTT PROP'RS. •£. L_ OANTT, Editor. PARTY ORGANIZATION. The hour has now arrived for the democratic party in’the ninth district to thoroughly organise for the fall campaign.' Our enemies are strain ing every nerve to regain their lost ground, and vie will need an unbrok en front and the greatest system and order to defeat them. Ho long as we are working in a disorganized body our efforts will be futile; but once the party unites and mover, together as a man, the overthrow of independent- ism and radicalism is assured. We rhbstnot underestimate the strength of Mr. SpAf.r. He is an opponent who will make a brave struggle before yielding up power. He will enter the campaign backed by a solid negro and radical vote, and has yet in his ranks many misguided followers from our party. But when a perfect organization is perfected, and the par ty lines plainly drawn, then men will see the company in which they are left and desert the motley horde. We mast have a party organization not only in every county, but in each mi litia district. We want our standard- beaber In the coming contest chosen by 1 the will of the entire party, and this lathe only fair and satisfactory wWy lli which it can be done. In our owii city of Athens we stand badly In need of party organization, not only to check the inroads of republicanism, but to regulate our own private mat ters. Let a democratic club be organ ized in every ward, who will pledge themselves to vote for no man that at tempts to buy hiB way into office, either through the medium of money, whisky or by pandering to the prej udices of our worst element. We must have men who will stand be side the ballot-box and see that no il legal vote goes therein. Our city pol itics badly need purifying. Every citizen knows that offices in Athens fin a matter of bargain and sale. Buy ing votes is carried on with a brazen attrontcry that disgusts and drives niauy good men irom the polls. We can only regulate this evil by thorough party organization. The democracy has overcome worst obstacles and odds than now confront them. But they did it through organization. We hope that Col. 8. C. Donns, charniun of the party in this county, will, at some op portune time in the near future, con vene a meeting of the party for this purpose, and that every democrat in the county will respond to the call; also that the other counties in the ninth district will not longer delay this important matter. MR. SPEER UNWINDS HIMSELF TO A REPUBLICAN PAPER. “Iii one paper, the Banner-Watch man. published ill my town, was print ed a few days since what purported to be a communication proposing to send a man to Washington “to Giticeati” me and “show mo the road that Garfield lately travelled.” I am careful, how ever, to exonerate the people of Georgia from any sympathy with such conduct, it springs trom the most depraved and abandoned politicians, who arc furious nud envious because of my success. Tiiis i iersecution is despised by the people, n the next’issue of his paper, the edi tor affected to deprecate the sentiments of tin- alleged communication, but the fact that he printed it shows his feel- logs toward me. Thla serves to show ■— the nttei recklessness ol some of the men who are fighting me, and through me, iudepemlentism. The readers of the Tribune should not suppose, however, that ttie desperate fraction, whose out rageous conduct 1 have spoken of, rep resent anything hut a detested, exaspe rated minority. Yet such is their ac tivity that unless the people bestir themselves, they will have great influ ence in tin state. The editor of the pa tter which publishes a proposition to '‘show me the road that Garfield travel ed” is praised in the most enthusiastic and unqualified terms hy the Macon pa per I mentioned for suen opposition to I. me.”, We -clip the above from an interview by Mr. Speer with a correspondent of tile New York Tribune ; and since that gentleman seems to be laboring under ttie same nightmare as his friend of the Sonthron, and seeks to turn an indiscreet word into persecution, besides insinua ting that the article was written in this office, wc deem it our duty to give Mr, Speer the name of his Gurnuu and also the circumstances under which the art! cle was published. The communication of which lie complains was dated Clay ton, Ga., and signed H. R. Smith, and > is still on Ale in our office. We .hastily glanced at «um and thinking it was mhlr a batch of news from that section placed it.in the hands of our printers -.1 We did-not read the proof, aud saw not i the silly threat until next day, wheu we editorially denounced its tone, ii Mr. Speer need not flatter himself that, he is so firmly seated upon Ills u throne that'Oiily a Gciteau can romov him. His opponents ask no deadlier weapon tlum his record. A man who was elected by the votes of many demo- , i i ends, and then’gives his support and in- n fluencc te the opposing party, is not fit , to represent such men as he confesses to compose Ilia party in the ninth district. Our people know that they owe their negro office-holders to this gentleman’s ...i diplomacy, and they farther see that i. when a coutest between the democracy and the republicans comes up that their congressman is very weak-kneed, or hies away so that he won’t have to commit himself. No, Congressman Speer, we don’t want yoit Guiteaucd. We prefer to reserve you for the democratic tri umph next fall, that, sill premature '■ starebuten may learn a lesson that-it "" w^ai’t do , toi'ntn, with thb republicans and try to hold with the democrats. ■ Two Independent candidates for ,. governor, are already announced in *i Texas. . 1 •• mi i Mr. Speer has gone to I'olntCom- " fort for the benefit of bis political health, . Let us give the devil his dues. ’ That the dogs of Georgia cost more than her , , preachers, and that rate claim a lithe of her wheat and corn, are among the curious deductions from a talk with the commissioner of agriculture. ri> ’ There Is a beautiful line of inconsis tency running thjough Mr. Stephens’ open letter and his endorsement of Mr. Speer's telegram to Dr. Felton. We shall holdup awhile and watch for further developments. Mackey, republican, has been seated in the bonse over Dibble, his demo cratic contestant. Mr. Speer found it healthy to leave about the time the vote was taken. He is certainly a nice representative of the democratic par ty in congress. Either the Washington correspond ent of the Atlanta Constitution, or Mr. Stephens one, has deviated from a linC of geometrical rectitude. Those purported Interviews don’t tally worth m pewter nhskle with Mr. Stephens’ certificate about his language to “Our 'Emory.”' If there is no Issue between con gressmen Speer and Stephens the lat ter gentleman is not the candidate the organised democracy is hunting for. We want a gubernatorial nominee with a bloody chasm at least a million miles wide between himself and inde- pendentism. If Mr. Stephens expects the support of the organized democratic party he must cut himself entirely aloof from the independents. He cannot run with the hare and hold witli the hounds. His endorsement of Mr. Speer’s epistle places him in a very awkward attitude, when taken in con nection with ills open letter to Mr. Smith, of Washington, Ga. Will Mr. Stephens please explnin what lie means by tubstantially cor rect? From our interpretation of his late contradictions it simply means that Mr. Speer made him diet on his own words. Weareafruid, however that the hearty meal will effect the old gentleman’s political digestion. At least, the democracy can’t digest him after his pitiable summersault. The State University.—The Ish- maelite in the article to which we re plied yesterday said, “If we do (the University of Georgia) injustice, we shall gladly right the- wrong.” In harmony with this profession, and in a candid and manly way it withdraws the charge against the Demosthenian society, which it had made under mis apprehension, and says, “We take great pleasure in saving that the socie ties of Franklin college do not endorse Emory Speer." Now we respectfully request it in the same spirit of candor to “right the wrong” it has done the University, when it sneeringly said that its “curriculum is in no respect superior to those of Emory and Mer cer.” The facts given in our article surely convinces it that in this matter too it has unwittingly done injustice.
