The people there are still religious, and they strain every nerve to' raise money for their ministers and to pay expenses. A traveling man who goes there a pood deal, and always seems benefited when he comes away, says he never struck a place where there was more piety, more genuine, true goodness, than in Tomah. He says the people seem to vie with each other to see which can do the most for (heir church. The travellfeg man attended a sociable at a residence there not long ago, which was held to raise money to buy the minister a pair of rubber pants for baptismal purposes, and he witnessed a scene he said he never shall forget. The residence was filled with the best peopleof the town, and at the head of the stairs ' were n number of ladies and gentle men who were discussing the charac teristics of citizens. One henutllul lady said to the drummer, "Yes, we arc lull of enthusiasm for the cause of religion, and would no anything rea sonable for the development of our finances, 'Why,” said she. as she leaned against the railing and tucked the lace into- the dashboard of her dress, which was cut down at the heal in front, “If I could make a dol lar toward paying the salary of our minister, I would slide down the ban ister.” The traveling man thought to bluff the beautiful and stylishly- dressed lady, and nulling nut a silver doiiur, he handed it to her saying, “Well, there’s no man that enjoys giving to the church more than I do. Here is your dollar, and now let’s see you slide down the banisters.” The lady blushed a Utile and acted as though she was surprised at being token np so quick, but Rcemed to re uli/.e that It was her duty to turn all the sheckles she could Into the coffers of the tfiiureh, she at once threw her self over the banister and began to go down slowly. It is evident tlfat she intended to hold on tight and go down easily anil quietly, and have it over and the dollar in the contribution box liefom the crowd found It out, hut somebody announced in the parlor that Mrs. .So-and-so was sliding down the banister, and everybody rushed Into the hall. Whether it was the crowd that made the lady nervous, or something let go unexpectedly, prob ably nobody will ever Know, but she .seemed to cut loose all at once, and shot down the banister ns though site was shot out of a gun, and as the pro cession arrived at the newel-post at the bottom tlie searcher after n silver dol lar yelled like a Comanche, and went over Into the crowd, against the hat- raek and card basket as though site had fa 1 leu out of a ballon. The drum mer soys the air seemed to be fairly surcharged with beautiful women. The minister, who came out of the parlor just as she was coming down, was lilt on the ear by the heel of a r.amberone g-iter, which blinded him so he held his hands over his eves and ■aid, “ Mercy on us!” and as she struck oil one shoulder he rushed up to her and asked if she had broken any bones. The remains were inverted, and os she pulled the frizzes out of her nuruth she answered, “ never mind tho bones; here’s your dollar,” and site handed the shining silver to the preacher. He took It mechanically, while the lady got up and was helped up stairs. One deacon who was struck in the pit took to l>e a cannon-ball with blonde hair on it, and a back comb on top, was picked up from under a marble table, and they had to blow in hla face before he could breathe. When he came to tile first thing he asked the man of the house, “ why in Gehenna don’t you have a lightning-rod on the house ?” It was nearly an hour before the lady and her attendants came down stairs, and she refused all offers of chairs, saying that she preferred to stand, but tne drummer came away early, because every time she looked towards him it seemed as though she wanted to bite ids head off. He says if lie had suggested the sliding down tho bauisters he should have felt as though same blame might attach to him, bat it was her game, and if she got beat at it he couldn’t see what was the sense in getting apnnky. It is safe to say that if the success of the churches at Tomah depends on ban ister-sliding hereafter ministers will S o hungry, unless they put side-sad- les.—fect’i Milwaukee Hun. The are this la a white man’s govern mast, and they net only do not believe In the Chinese, but are equally as strongly opposed to the negro. They have or dered that only white men will be per mitted to work in the coal and iron remans, and that the importation of negro labor must be resisted. On IhU pome a Pittsburg dispatch to the Phlltfflelphia Brett says: “Afterthe 1st of Juue the train men on the various railroads leading out of Pitts burg will refuse to haul any trains lomivd with coal dug by negroes, and that firemen and engineers will not ^uso.that coal In their locomotives. When completed it will aid largely in the development of that part of the stale, and turn a valuable trade to Athens, when the North-Eastern reaches Itabun Gap. An Unrecorded Scene at the White House. From the BUhfDemoenU. , There was a scene at a social dinner at the white house early in March that was not put down In the programme. Several times tbs president unwittingly addressed Mm as Sew retary," the title by which Cabinet offi cers are personally designated, and each time Mr. Blaine’s plumage was vis- bly ruffled, and his bhick ejre* snapped suppressed sparks. At the third time his words were/repeated-Mr.; Blaine leaned ami said qnieUy, “I’llthank you, Mr. President, not to address me by the title-of tlie office of which you have.de- prived me. PREPARING FOR COMMENCEMENT. On Wednesday, through the courtesy of Chancellor MW I, we visited a few of | toe college buildings, to see what prep arations are being made for the approach ing commencement. The grounds have been put in better order than ever before. J Those ragged hillsides and gullies have I been nicely terraced, and sodded with I Bermuda and bine grass, which is grow- I ing luxuriantly. This has been smooth ed «>fl'nicely with a mower, and the en tire cauipus is uow beautifully carpeted! with green. The shrubbery set out by 1 ! Mr. Kerckmnn is growing nicely, and in I a few years will give a toady p trk for I students. There is a large variety of ] young trees, which will lie of great assis- f tam e to the students in Botany. The chapel building will be put in I thorough order, so as to accommodate I the largo crowd expected. The press! will be especially remembered, aud I have a most desirable position reserved I for them, and furnished with every c m-1 venience. The splendid painting of Sbl Peter’s cathedral, at rear of the rostrum, I we arc sorry to see, shows signs of wear.! The painting is cracking, and in one! place has i>eclod off. Artists say it can-1 not be remedied, as the ground eoat wasl not “packed" into the cloth. This isl the work of a gentleman reared in, Ath-| ens, and besides its real value as a paint-1 ing, is doubly prized on this account. Every department will be put In per-1 feet order and throw-n open to visitors I during commencement, so that tho pub-1 lie way see the unexcelled advantages! offered by toe State University. The| museum, too, will be In order by i and will he richly worth • visit. -faculty intend to leave nothing und that will add to the success ot the sion. The debates will be unusually int esting, and several speakers of great e quence are chosen. In fact, it is predii ed tost a second Hill, Stephens Toombs will make their debuts on I occasion. A very large attendance is expect as it will be one of toe most interesting commencements ever held in Athens.] Letters have been received not only from every part of this, but even distant states, announcing visitors. We hmv now plenty of hotel room to accommo date all, aud our citizens will leave nott Ing undone to make their guests enjo themselves. ■’ : "’ r ' A Good Thiso.—Mr. W. H.
