We had for gotten that we were enjolned from publishing those letters. Mr. 8peer should be made minister to Russia. He ooold Lelp tbe ^sar out amasingly strangling the press. \! Kmory Speer Once More Makes Him! self to the Republican Side or the Tv BOW EMORY SERVED HISFRIEXDS. -'‘To-day in-the-house the democrats were malting a strong fight against the system of assessing government teppond to OUR CAND1DATB FOR CONGRESS MAN AT LARGE. I \ Since we first proposed the same of HonT H. H. Carlton, of Clarke, as a candidate for congressman ftom the stats at large, that gentleman has re- oslved from evecy mention of Georgia so many flattering letters of encour agement that be has formally per mitted his name to go before the July convention In Atlanta, and submit his oialnb to the democratic party of Geocgik', Be. U notan offloe seeker, bat tf the people desire him to serve them, now,as he has done through the darkest days bfGeorgl* and the south Dr. Carlton Is ready to the call of his country. We suppose there are very few men In Georgia bat what are acquainted with this gentleman’s record. No liv ing man can point to a single blot or blemish upon his honored name. Worlds soold not bribe him or tarn Dr. Carlton from what he believes tabs bdaduty. While.a member of the Georgia legislature, he carved a name and peoord as enduring as the eternal hills. While carefully look lug to the interests of hla own immer dlate section, he kept beneath hi* eye every part ol Georgia, and there is not a division or section of the state bat owes Utt a debt of gratitude for hie vigilant guard upon their rights; His reoord In this body shows that Dr. Carlton’s sphere of usefulness wss far too contracted. His brilliant mind and determined power proves him worthy of r more exalted sphere, where he may have latitude for the display of his great Intellect. Dr.' Carlton has done much for the educational interests of Georgia than any other man. He recognized the feet when slavery was abolished that he had a'duty to perform to his country and the rising generation, and that was to educate her whole people. He has always bad the local os well as the general interest of Georgia at heart, and some of the grandest moves made toward progress are traceable to Dr. Carlton’s masterly mind Savannah owes him a debt of grati tude for his labor toward improving the sanitary condition of that city; for to H. H. Carlton is largely due this great work. He lathe father of the Geological survey of Georgia, which has been of great benefit to our state in general, but more especially to the mountains and mineral belts in developing their resources and hidden wealth. The people along the line of the Ma rietta A North Georgia railroad are indebted to him for having done so much for that line. The people interested In that vast territory opened np by the North- Eastern road, and their present pros perity and the enhanced value of their property they owe to the able man agement and arduous labors of Dr. Carlton. t As chairman of the finance commit* toe Dr. Carlton secured an appropri ation^ |5,000 to the Dahlonega obi- lego, which should endear him to tbs people ol that section. The Inmates of the Lunatic Asylum, could they speak out, would pay trib ute to his fostering care. As a Journalist, he has always been In the front ranks, fighting for the de mocracy. Dr. Carlton has kept himself poor working for the public good, whilst with his fine business qualifications he might have entered the speculative field and gotten rich. . , . . His war record Is without a blemish. No more gallant aoldier unsheathed hUjnrordln defense of the Lost Cause. Hla man ldollxed their eptnmander, and would to-day willingly lay down their lives in hla defense. As com mander of the gallant old Troupe ar tillery he made a n«m* that will ever be emblazoned upon the hearts of the southern people. Having been sever al times wounded, Dr. Carlton’s mother begged him to resign and go into the medical department, and hav ing a great love and reverence for her he sent in his resignation, which was approved until ft got to Gen. Lee, who disapproved it with his reasons en dorsed, that “the army could not do with out the tervicet oj »uch an officer at Dr. Carlton.” Dr. Carlton was the first Rian who find the courage to attempt to redeem Clarke oounty from radical rule, and ' to hla bold front and stirring appeals' are ocr people Indebted for the over throw of that party. As a physician he has done a great deal to relieve the poor in and around hla native place, and his skill and purse has ever been open to the cry of dis tress. As a lawyer Dr. Carlton has al ready made rapid strides toward the front ranks of his profession, and bids fair to soon rank among the leading uriste of the state. Hon. H. H Carlton wrote an art!' cle when editor of the Southern Ban ner which was in the nature of an ap peal to the people of South Carolina, recommending and advising as to what was necessary for their redemp tion ftqm radical rule. Whether or not the people of that state followed his advice, nevertheless, when they actod aa he recommended the state was redeemed ,and Gen. Hampton elected governor. It will be the grandest times since 8outh Carolina was redeemed from, radical rule. j, We have not as yet found but two Stephens men In Athens. We are in clined to the belief that the July con vention will "p it him in his little bed.” At the meeting of the democratic county committee of Spalding county it was discovered that no one of them was in favor of Little Aleck for gov ernor. "Judge, t»Te me from those letters;' The linking statesman cried— "At least till I can fix 'em up And prove that Christy lied.” “At heart I am—" We keep for getting that Mr. Speer has closed down the air-brakes on this paper. We are afraid we’ll have that $500 fine to pay yet. Wonder how many people knew that the removal of Andrew Clark was conveyed upon the ground that he bad done nothing to build up the republi can party In Georgia. Wonder how the bloated bond-hold er from the ninth will explain hla ac- knowldgement that he charged Hen ry Christy a commission for securing him a government office. - - - * ' But we grin wavs this last dalm and simply propose, the name or Hon, B.
