OBORQIA'S POLITICAL HOSPITAL.
A number of Georgia’s old chronic pol-

headquarters in Atianta, tor the pur

manipulating, in their own ecltUh in

They have always lived upon public

that the highest honors within the gift of

of these antiquated politicians, and
there would rise from the rulus a new
set of leaders, Imbued with modern
ideas, who would place Georgia again
it the head of states. Tho day of those
time-worn politicians lias passed. It is
time that they had given place to new
men and new measures. They liave been
honored lung enought sod should
be content to retire upon the
laurels already bestowed. But
they have no idea of quitting office, un
til forced out by an uprising of popular
sentiment. This h*a already shown it
self, but sympathy for the past services
of these old patriarchs has stayed the
hand of reproof. But when the people
see that these old stagers are notonlyas
greedy as ever for office, but are actually
now engaged iu manipulating the politics
of the state in their own selfish interests,
forbearance will cease to be a virtue and
they will rise in their might and admin
ister a rebuke as unexpected as it will he
overwhelming. When they voted tor
Atlanta as the capital of the state our
people did not intend that it should give
that city license to assume a dictatorship
over their offices. Yet such is undoubt
edly the case. There is to-day existing
iu Atlanta one f the most selfish and de
grading rings ever known, with this
hand of old political parasites at its
head. They meet in convention, put out'
a cut-and-dried ticket, and expect the
unsophisticated voter* to gulp it down
without question. On tho 10th of July
this farce will be attempted, and we
want to see a stinging rebuke adminis
tered. We want to see good men elected
front all the counties as delegates, and
they sent uninstructed, so that by a com
bined effort these political dictators can
have administered to them a stinging
lesson from the representatives of the
Georgia democracy.
* THAT RABUN LETTER.
The Gainesville Southron baa been
endeavoring to make considerable per
secution capital for Mr. Emoby Speer
out of a. communication from Rabun
county, published a lew months since in
the Banner-Watchman, and threatening
to assassinate Stskb. We stated the
next day that the letter was handed' to
the printer without oar seeing the objec
tionable, paragraph, and at once con
demned the spirit of the same. But
the next issue of the Gainesville Southron
its editor came out in a flaming article
defying us to produce the author’s name
and asserting that he believed the letter
to have been penned by the editor of this
paper. We paid no attention to this or
other repeated defiances in that sheet to
give the writer's name; hut when Mr.
Speer, in an interview with the oorrea-
pondwit of 1 northern paper, referred to
the letter as a specimen of the unholy
war made upon him by the organised
demooratio press, we decided to no longer
bear the odium of the charge and'to pub
lished the name of the reported writer
that waa signed to the document. Forth
with the editor of the Southron publishes
a communication from some of the beet
men iu Rabun county that no such man
as the name given lived in that section
end again charging us with its author
ship. This was the first time we auapl
cioned that we had fallen into a trap set
by Mr. Speer and his hirelings, and we
weretben entirely satisfied that the editor
of the Gainesville Southron knew when
he was defying us to produce the author,
tho real name of the writeh—and
that he was a Si-kir man. We also be
lieved that Mr. Speer was a party to the
degrading scheme, and the whole mo
tive was to assist in building upapersc-
cutiou schedule, upon which ho wants to
make the raoe. We visited Rubun coun
ty to satisfy ounelfofthls, and came
back couvtnoed that the Banner-Watch
man had been made the innocent victim
oft deep-laid scheme, well -worthy the
degrading campaigns inaugurated
Mr. Emoev Speee in this district.
But we have just had a long conversa
tion with a former Speer supporter/and
what waa at first only a suspicion has de
veloped Into a certainty. Oar Informant
stated that we could, on his assertion
boldly ESMrt that Peteu F. LaWsue ei
