There is more corn planted t>*an has been known In Georgia since the war. Yoa^ will sec, in traveling through the country,largefleldsofthieluxnrtoasae- real that had heretofore been devoted to cotton. And it seems to be equally promising on both bottoms and land. The crops have suffered hut lit* tic from the plugues incident in 'for mer years, but yon see a splendid- stand as well us a promising crop. King cotton, this year, will be A sur plus crop—as it should be—and the proceeds from its sale can be applied by farmers to either paying off their old debts or in investments or im proveiueuts, instead of beiug devoted "to buying corn and bay, as heretofore. And again, our planters have been very cautious about purchasing this season. They have exercised the strictest economy, and managed tb. keep their hands also within bounds. Merchants tcllus that their credit sales don’t amount to more than half what they have In previous years. Far mers have 1-oiiglit only such goods as were absolutely necessary, and paid lorn bulk of them by bartering arti cles that could he spared from the farm. They lind prepared for an emergency, and the unexpected horn of plenty is to them a clear dividend. It Is true, ns some will doubtless Con tend, that the summer is not yet pass ed and a drought would even now blast the happy outlook. This Is true, l-ut we expect no such calamity A>Ve have for the past ten years experien ced very poor crops, and any |old farmer will tell you that long years of drought are sure to l>e followed by an equal season of plenty. In tact, we predict tine crops for the next decade, and this season they bid fair to equal any yield within “the memory of our oldest inhabitant.” , There never was such a Iruit crop; the small grain bar vest is unprecedented: hay has yield ed abundantly; no plague has visited our stock; the health of t''e country was never better, and the smiles of Providence seems to beam upon the every ertort of our husbandry. Let us turn this blessing to good account. Our oppressed and debt-ridden plan ters see at last the dawn of a.brighter day upon them. They can pay oil those mortgages that have hnng upon their minds like a millstone; they can improve their homes and farms; they can plant what their sound sensetells them is for their good, and not be forced to accept the dictation of . the merchant who runs them; yea, they can all subscribe and pay for the Ban ner-Watchman, and make their homes and family happy. Atlanta, June SO.—Attention' Is now uttracted to a new sort of cotton plant which bids fair to prove hn- mensciy valuable. For many years Mr. A. A. Subers, of Macon, has been carefully experimenting to hybridise the cotton plantthat grows wild in Florida with the common okra. The cotton plant used is of that species which is found on the lowlands of the Culoosahatchie river. The new plant retains the okra stalk and the foliage of the cotton. Its flower and fruit, however, is strikingly unlike ei ther cotton or okra. The plant has an average height of two feet, and each plant 1ms only one bloom. This Is a magnlfllcent flower, very much like the great magnolia in fragrance and equally as large. Like the cotton bloom, the flower is white for several duys after It opens, after which it is pale pink, uml gradually assumes darker shades of this until it becomes red, when it drops, disclosing a won derful boll. Foi about ten days this boll resembles the cotton, and then its growth suddenly increases as if by magic untiMt-Anally reaches the sise of a big cocoanuL Not until it reaches this sixe does the lint appear. Then its snowy threads begin to burst from the boll, but are held securely i|i place by the okra-like tliovns or pointt that line the boll. Incident, which tos dip from- the ATHENS.
