It lias certainly come to a nice pass when such men as Judge Erwin are assailed and Villifled by Speer's hench man', simply because his name had been- suggested in connection with congressional honors in the district. Is nothing Sacred from the vile touch and pen of this creature? Atlanta Confutation. it will be remembered I hut a short time ago a letter was published in llic Athens Haiiiiersigned by H. R. .Smith, and dated Clayton, Georgia, jh which it was stated that a plan was on fool to go to Washington and ‘Guityuu Speer,” which, of course, meant to assassinate the young member from the nlulh. The history of Uta publication of this letter is a queer one.. It came to Mr Yaneey, busiuess manager of the Ban ner, aeeompauied with a note asking that it be published and the name of the writer withheld. Tlie note did uot indicate what the communication was and lie laid it on the desk of Mr. Gantt, the editor. We will sugjest to our friends in the eighth that it is a suicidal policy to fight organized democrats on the plea thut they at one time affiliated with the republican party. Thu taunts of the Gainesville Southron provoked replies from the Banner, and a most furious tilt has been going on between the editors in which there-have been mutual threats of cowiiiding, and the mystery has remained up to yesterday unsolved—the Soushron holding tlie llanner responsible for the letter until they could produce a boua fide author, ana the Banner claiming that it- was a trick of some henchman of S|ieer. On yesterday Mr. Yancey, of the Banner, reached Atlanta. ■ He was on his way to Rabun county accompanied by a detect! vo for the purpose of- ferret ing out the author of the Guiteau let ter. He stated that lie was .determined to get at the bottom of the matter if it took him a year. Last night Mr. Yan cey was in a room witli a Carlton'- caucus, when the subject of the letter was mentioned and J udge Aleck Erwin asked him if hi-hud in his|o<-ket. Mr Yancey produced it, and Judge Krwiq looking at tlie letter closely, said in an emphatic voice: “Why, I kuow the man that wrote this.” “How do you know it?” plain the mystfjy ; # . Our conversation with Mr. Price occurred in this manner: We had just returned from a trip to the falls, in Rabun county, together witli the city council of Athens, and while there, in the presence of Messrs. Bkusse, Wood and other geutlemen from this city, conversed with several parties from that county, but failed to get any satisfactory information in regard to the whereabouts of “H. R. Smith.” We acquainted Mr. Price with this fact, and volunteered the information that we believed the Ra bun letter was written at the instiga tion of the independent leader to manufacture material for a persecu tlon issue. “Yes,”; remarked Mr. Price, “and you may charge the same on Lawsuk—aud if he deqiqa it, ask him if he recollects a conversation that lie had witli a certain member of the Georgia legislature in Gainesville, last summer, in tlie back room of his office. Now write no more tiiau I tell you, and if he dentes it you can' refer him to me.” We were convinced be fore this that tlie editor of tlie South ron knew even before we received the threatening missive of its existence, from the repeated manner in which he dared Us to produce the author’s name, and we are now convinced of the fact by evidence and affidavits that we shall bring forth in a future issue. What that conversation bc- twten Price and Lawshk was we do not know; bat If it can be brought to light we feel assured that a deep-laid scheme of some sort will be made plain, that only Mr. Price’s high sense of honor prevents him from repeating. With this we dismiss the subject of the Rabun letter until we explode our bomb-shell, which will make plain the means by which Mr. Sheer expects to ride a persecution hobby horse to victory. Every sensible man well knows that we would not indite and publish a forgery one day and de nounce it the next; neither would we use a fictitious name, knowing that it would be exposed. But the real au thor of the Kabun letter has been dis ■ covered—he is a Speer appointee—Is named Thomas M. Bradford, -and we will in due season publish a mass of testimony confirmatory of tbs fart that will indellllily affix this infamy upon Mr. Spber and bis henchman. To-ilan'$ Haotaiiuuf.
