BANNER-WATCHMAN. , f FROM ATHENS TO SARATOGA. Th« Strong And Incidents—Tho Fi»r tamed Hud8qn~Sai)iii(| on IaiKo & '> or ^ ,. ' Our-party, anuaisting of four “loru,” Mii|irot*'i Utl female.* loit Atheua for Saratoga, Thursday •luoruing, June 6th. Oiio might think it rather u cou rageous imili rtaking to venture so far away from home, considering the fact that wc are now* ver;*"traveled” set. A limn hi*ve enough to take charge of tlui partf-'ticoiild.iiot t>e found in tin* s.nte of Georgia, unit ho there was no alternalivo for me treasure Keeking la- die-,; they w» au eompelled to make the trip alone. Tim first morning’s travel brought us to Atlanta where we remained long ennui'll to deeido on the most ilcsira- hle root's . purchase our tickets and perfect oilier Arrangements. The Keimesaw being the only lino offer- ing reduced ixues to teachers, of course we decided in favor oi that. The tick* eta purchased took us hy rail to Nor folk, Va.i thence hy water to New York up the Hudson via the dog line steamer to Albany, and froip tlieuce hy rail to Saratoga. The part of our Journey most dreaded by all, the sea voyage from Norfolk to New York proved to be the most delightful part. Mu eh to our surprise not one of ua was ful verandas' and parks, delicious bunds of music, appetizing tables, in ■ fact every thing that can contribute to the eve, ear ar.d tasie of the pleas ure seeking visitors. The fa.-hidnable season has hardly begun I have lieen informed that it opens the iirst. of August. There is here every vnrle-, ty in dress, that is in shade and color, . but very little elegant dress. People j are very independent, they wear I what they choose, and give oilier peo- i jilu perfect leave to laugh and cri'i-1 cise as much as they like. There is no end to the sunups and I the variety of watdb. At each one you j , are furnished with an analysis of the; water, its medicinal virtues, and left to decide as to which Is best adapted to your condition. I decided Very quickly that I did not need any* of them, ps I was un/athiimahty well, but thought to satisfy curiosity. I would taste flic, woter from several. I "paid j ten cents for a sparkling glo ss of the, Congress, took one sip, which 1 Would more cheerfully have paid fifty eepts to have decently gotten rid of. Oi course our party was manifestly given to those who drank with enjoyment, thieeor four glasses at a time. Un • traveled Southerners make a good many mistakes when they come North but they are smart enough to learn rapidly, and have the independence to laugh at and enjoy their own blun ders. I could relate quite a number sea sick, -Wo had smooth sailing, j of jokes on our own party If I were not bright skies, and cooling breezes. We j „f rtt id they would retaliate by telling were out I suppose thirty-six hours,' hut when- one is elegantly waited upon, has pleasant company,.and un- exceptionably surroundings, the time seems much shorter than it really ia. We had the good fortune to be thrown with pleasant traveling companions. There was a charming party from our state, and others front different states. Among those I would name is the Rev. Mr. R. M. Saunders, now of Nor folk, Va., a gentleman well known both In Alabama and Georgia. He is at the head of a large Female College, of over three hundred students. We found him lobe a most enthusiastic teacher, and perfectly willing to give his co-laborers the benefit of his most valuable experience. From him we learned much to interest and instruct us in our own work. Wc reached New York harbor at 10 p. m. Sunday night. The travel on the Sabbnth was unavoidable. A pleasant religious service conducted by the Rev. Mr, Saunders on board the steamer, away out on the occali, made the day u>jiic one of the most iiuprw-sive I o.cr spun!. We lauded ai i'utr N'i. ii, spent the night on board the sleaiHci, and at eight ll»o nc.ja uiyi.jiu.c tooji the Hudson river Unit froife lV;r No. i>e. The far-famed scenery of the i ludsi.ei had excited the something on uie. There Is one, how ever, too good to keep, which I give, provided my readers will not Inquire which memliera of the party were the blunderers.. One asked the waiter at Congress Hall for the list to* oitler her dinner, when she w as immediately re proved by her more enlightened sis ter, and Instructed to Inquire for the programme. One of the mostdelightlul -lavs spent aiuce we left home, was the one sail ing on Lake George. If there is more beautiful sheet of water on the face of the whole earth, I should like much to sec It. No brush of an artist can paint, or pen of a poet describe, the changing color or sparkling ripple of itBclearand beauteous liosom.
