THE PERSECUTION WAIL It la a well-known fact that the Gainesville 8ou th ron is butthe mouth- pleeeof Mr. Emory Speer, and there Is no doubt hut a large majority of its editorials are from the pen of our con gressman. One has but to peruse the columns of that sheet to discover that the Independent leader is making a desperate effort to get up material upon which he can make the race on a pei secutlon issue. We first And tail walling out because the Macon Tel egraph laid at his door the insolent bearing of the negroes niter the Roun tree Murder. Next he insults the edt tors of the Atlanta Constitution, and when Col. E. P. Howell resents the tame by openly publishing Mr. Speer as a blackguard and a liar, lie sends 111 through the Southron another hriel to the >good people of the district. Again, when the Banner-Watchman accused Mr. Spekk of being responsi ble for our negro office-holders, he yelled out “ slander" at the top of his voice, and set his friends to writing letters over the district denying the fact; but when those Christy letters came out Mr. Speer saw that we had him by the horns, and so had to throw himself at the feet or .fudge Erwin for protection from his own missives. Not satisfied with this, lie had pre self-respect. We predict that next I indeed fail Mr. Speer will be found leading a alt 0111 forlorn hope of negroes, oomqaauded j which by a very few personal friends. Mr. Speer himself lias drawn the race issue in our district, and we cheerfully ceept tiie gauntlet. By bla acta be has said: “I consider the black man nore deserving of office Ilian the white race;’’ and now the Caucasian will contest, the matter at the polls. Wo have never written a line about, or made a charge against Mr. Speer but what we are prepared to prove if he will only remove that injunction. We charge him with se cretly affiliating with the radical party, and lie is solely responsible for our colored office-holders. In the name of decency, cannot an honorable gen tleman offer in opposition to Emory Speer without living the recipient of such abuse and slander? Has Mr. Speer a lease oil the office and Is it crime to oppose him ? Is there no uame and no character too pure and sacred for the leprous pen of Mr. Speer’s imported Yankee Zulu edi tor ? Does lie think the people of the ninth district are so far lost to princi ple as to stand idly by and hear ope of the South’s bravest defenders and purest citizens abused and villifled by a man who Is a natural enemy to our section, and who only came among us for the loaves and Ilshcs of govern ment patronage? We believe not. Our people know Alf.o Erwin to be one of tne noblest men that treads the earth, anil they can but feel a supreme and lasting contempt for any candi date who attempts to strengthen his own claims by bringing out a Yankee editor to cast his abusive epithets at his head. The editor of the Gaines ville Southron cannot hurt Judge Er win ; hut we are quite certnin that such villainous attacks will very se riously injure the claims of his mas ter, Mr. Kmory Spbek, and conclu sively show to the people that the cry of persecution should come from the other side. It is indeed a mortifying fact 1o know that the property-owners, the intelligence and the real worth of the ninth district is governed by our most degenerate element; yet such is the case. We do not mean in this'charge to include the few worthy white men whoa re still acting witlt the* indepen dent party, through admiration or personal regard for Mr. Kmory Speer; hut we refer to our colored race and a certain class of the white population but iittle. if any, in ad vance of them in mental culture or social habits. Mr. Spkkr has gathered to his fold this motley hnarde of un scrupulous nnd unreliable voters, offi cered them with a few leaders of hite'- ilgence who are attached to him. and thus presentsn strong front to the true worth of the di-triet. The evils of the political supremacy of t)ii< element have already been felt in our district, and more es|iei'ially In the city of Ath ens. We find that Mr. Spker’8 suc cess has nerved the hands of his fol lowers for far greater accomplishments than the election of a congressman, and every contest witnesses new dep redations, We see the open practice of buying and selling votes, and the respectable element actually driven away from the polls by the disgrace ful conduct of these barbarians. A mail to secure office in Athens has to buy bis way into power, and then promise his allegiance to the worst element of our society. The best class of our population has no chance what ever, for Uiey find their timid fight in behalf orjustice and decency buried beneath a mountain of black ballots. Our people owe this wretched state of affairs to the ambitious candidacy of Mr. Speer, for lie it was who filled the opening lett vacant by the defeat* ed republican party and again organ ized the blacks. While Athens was the first point to renp the whirlwind of our prostituted politics, it is no guarantee that the evil will remain within our narrow limits. Re-elect our Independent congressman, and before another year has passed you will see a state of affairs in the ninth district before which the radical ad ministration in Georgia will shine forth like a luminous star of bright ness. In our prostituted elections and negro office-holders you see but a fore taste of what la in store for tbo entire district. Mr. Speer knows that his lease on office is lengthened by the power of this element, and he will leave no stone unturned to corrupt our politics and swell his army of inde pendents. He dare not trust his claims in the hands of bis Intelligent cocatltuency. His whole campaign to fonght from the filthiest stand point, to sii>t the taste of his black supporters. Bnt we believe the politi cal doom of this man is fast drawing to a close. The honest, thinking peo ple In the ninth district largely out number this coalition movement. Heretofore Mr. Speer has acted with in the pale of democracy, and sympa thising with hto talent, many honest white men saw nothing wrong in sup porting him. But now that they see he baa betrayed their confidence fortunate thing for the organized de-1. tj mocracy to have him on their side. If | t^en excelled." has openly^fongST*fn thoT rauks of 'their enemies, and has kicked honorebto w)rite men out of office to give place nance from Mr. Stephens he will find himself greatly disappointed. But this to no time for dlssention in our ranks. With Mr. Speer’s vul nerable record at last in our grasp, we can show him up in Buch an odious light that a true-born southern white man will feel ashamed to be numbered among his supporters. We can prove that lie is building up his power by elevating the negro race over the whites, and that he is secretly con- in almost entirely obviated, and the perfect manner of distillation deleterious substances are elimina from the spirit.
