BANNER-WATCHMAN. MANUrACtURINO. .PERSECUTION. Mr. dl'KKR knew that he could no* longer ofler for congress in this dis trlct under the gauze of democracy, aud he had to look about for another plea upon which to make the race. Knowing the tender sympathies of the Amerlcau people for the victim of abuse, “Our Emory” decided to try what the persecution wail would do for him. But to carry to success this programme, one thiug he lacked— material to operate upon. He has had his friends for several months past writing through the district and cry ing aloud in behalf of their slandered master; but Mr. Spkek well knew that no charge bad been made against him but what could be substantiated, and he had to hunt iu a new direction for stock to work upon. So through his hirelings at home there was con cocted and forwarded to this office a certain letter purporting to be from Rabun county, and threatening to show Spkkr “the road that Garfleld had lately traveled." As we have already slated, the letter was given to the printer without our noticing the threatening paragraph until the next day, when we promptly came out with an editorial uud condemned such senseless and inceiyliary threats. Any sensible man well knows that we would not Indite a threat one day and denounce it Uie next. But not so with" Mr. Spkkr’s organ at Gainesville. Ignoring the fact that we hail already condemned the language of the Raima letter, Lawshk comes roaring to the front, boldly affirms that the letter was penued in the Banner-Watchman office, and defied us to produce the name of the writer. Considering that it waa none of Lawshk’s business', this we declined to do, even in the face of his repeulcd taunts. Will not the attitude of the .Soutliraa convince any unbiased mind that its editor at the time he was making his dares knew positively that the letter was a Spkf.k trap, set for the pur|K>se of mannfact uring persecution evidence—and fur ther, that lie knew t lie real author of tho same. But at last Mr. Spkkr, convinced that his political enemies had fallen into a pit from which they could not extrieate themselves, plays his first role in “The Martyr." He seeks out the correspondent of some Northern Radical paper, and pours into his willing ear the story of his troubles, trials and tribulations. He tells him how a certain paper in his own city had threatened to Guitcau nini, tor the noble cayse of independ ent democracy, and then he fell upon the neck of that correspondent and wept crocodile tears as large us hick- orynuts. Since the party against whose head this threat had been hurled hud at tempted to make political capital of same, we felt it due ourself to give the name of the writr, as signed to the ltahun communication, which was “H. R. Smith.” Until this time we honestly belie veil the article to have been written by some unthinking democrat, aud did not for an instant surmise that it Imd been penned by a Spkkr henchman, doubtless at the in stauce of his master. Rut as soon as the independent organ at Gaiuesville prances to the front with a long string of testimonials that no such man as "H. R. Smith” lived in Rabun eoun ty, and denouncing the editor of the Ranner-Watebman as author of the letter, we for the first time began to suspicion the true state of affiiirs—viz that the ltubuu letter was conceived in the brain of Speer and written and mailed by his friends; and we further kuew that the document could only have been forwarded and the envelope stamped by some postmaster, who had access to matei ial for that purpose. So on our late trip to the falls we made every exertion to unearth testimony, hut tailed. Ill the mean time I.awshe was ringing every ween in our ears liis defiance, and was fust drawing public attention from Mr. Spkkk’s lovesick letters to radicals aud ne groes to this less important document. After our interview with Hon. Wel don Price, we charged the author ship of the Rabun letter upon P. h\ I.awshe, for we were then, aud are now confident, that he knew the rcul author from the first; and any man who will caretully reud the editorials in the Southron on this subject can but agree with us that its editor was a party to the villainous attempt to manufacture persecution material hy wliich Mr. Spkkk could make tile race for congress. But as described in u past issue our business manager, Mr. O. H. Yancey, iu a most uuexpected manner, discovered the author of the Rabun letter to he Thomas M. Brad ford, postmaster at Olarkesville, aud ail appointee of Emory Spkkr, and he is a man who lias never voted a democratic ticket since the war. We have tightened the coils around this man, aud will in due season publish an array of testimony that will indeli bly tlx tho moustrous scheme upon him. But we look upou this old uiau as only the pliant tool in the hands of the master at Washington and his brazen lieutenant in Gainesville. It is Hpkkr-I.aw.siiE who must hear tlie blame, ior the former is the man to lie benefited by the dee|i-laid scheme, which is as contemptible as it will prove duniuiug. Every intelligent voter must feel un utterable contempt for a man who would stoop to such dishonorable ends. It is bad enough for a candi date to shirk uis own record by throw ing himself upon the mercy of the people and deadening his infumou record by the wail of persecution. But this Mr. Sl*EEK tlmll not Jo. We have * exposed his first attempt in this line, and have torn the veil of hypocrisy from his fttc^j. He must stand boldly before the people and answer the fol lowing charges: 1. Why did you, after being elected by democratic votes, refuse to go iuto a caucus of that party ? 2. Uponwliatwinyou, (callingjour- self a democrat) base your great influ- v enoe with the stalwart republican ad ministration, except that you are lending your aid toward assisting the enemies of your country ? S. Why are your associates In Wash ington almost exclusively among the radicals? ’’ ,u " " 4. Why did you have removed a Whiteman from the Athens post-of fice, to give place to a cotofsd man? 5. Why, not satisfied with one ne gro In tills position, did you ask him to make another colored man his chief assistant? 1 • fl. Why is It that you have flooded onr district with negro office-holders, While by your own confession yon charged Mr. Hbnry Christy black mail for getting him a pitiful position IHwKffiZ*! n. • he given to the public? ! Why is it that we see negro poll- I 1 ticinns daily barangueing mobs of! Idle blacks upon the streets of Athens j in your behalf, unless they know you to he the representative of the black instead of tho white race? 9. Why is it that you, through your spokesumn in Gainesville, assailed llie character of Judge a. 8. Krwin, simply ujron the supposition that he would probably be your opponent? 10. Tell us further, If you thought the intelligent people of this district are so confiding and innocent to swallow without question your late dodge to draw public atten tion from your own record aud the Christy letters, by that Rabun for gery, to build up prosecution? »• 11. And again, why did you remove W. H. Heard, the colored mail agent oil theXorth-Eastern, just as ntratige- nients were being made for carrying the mail up the extension, and give him n much more lucrative position on the main line, except that you were afraid it would weaken your cause uiiioug the mountain boys to to have one of your negro appointees daily flaunted iu their face? 12. And lastly, Mr. Emory Speer, after u number of those innocent mountaineers had acted upon your advice and continued the business of making whisky, under a solemn pledge | that you would stand squarely by them, why were you deaf to their a|>- peals for aid, aud in yourelevated posi tion at Washington—iu which their votes had placed you—you listeued not to their pleadings for mercy? You only wauted their votes, and these se cured, you thought not another in stant of your innocent victims in their trouble. Ho, Mr. Hpkkk, your record is too vulnerable to hide it behind the tat tered veil of persecution. You will have to appear before a tribunal of your constituency to answer not only liie above, hut many other charges that we can and will prove as soon as you step from behind the judicial coat-tail of Judge Krwin. and per mit us to show your record up in its true colors. If exposiug the treacher ous actions of a congressman, elected by democratic votes, and opening the eyes of a blinded constituency to his public acts, he persecution, we pleud guilty to the charge. But upon your return home next month you will uot find ears that call he biiuded to your acls by that rare gift of sophouiorean eloquence. They have listeued to your syren song long enough, uud find that it leads them straight into the African and Radical cumpa. How any white man, calling him self a democrat, eau endorse the rec ord of Mr. Emory Emory by support ing him again is more than we can He has placed negroes in office to distribute the mails to your fami lies, and flooded our district with his colored appointees. His election proves a victory to republicans, and should our people he cursed by having him again to represent them iu con gress, we may look for the ninth dis trict to be Africanized and the white man made but the “hewer of wood and the drawer of water" for the black far us official patronage is con cerned. We will see every office over which Mr. Spkkr has control given to liis chosen people, and the whites must meekly bow their beads to the yokeofthis ambitious young office- seeker. To substantiate this charge, we refer to tlie course of Mr. Speer in tlie past. We now ask our white vo ters, can you, will you. support this man? We believe not. A victory for SPEER is n victory for radicalism and ne gro supremacy! Suffer no longer from Dyspep sia, Indigestion, wantof Appetite^oss of Strength lack of Energy, Malaria, Intermittent Fevers, Ac.
