Mr. Stephens Intends to give Bpeer
a few whacks over the head with his
skillet during the pending campaign
a Jf Mr % Speer is a democrat, why is
it that he is so heartily endorsed by
every ra<lical and nigger convention
held in QeorgiaT 1 ’ 1 1
A number of Mr. Bpeer’n followers
in Athens will vote for Gartrell. Why
don’t they eat the whole crow, and
gulp down Pledger, too?
It is surpected that the letter of en
dorsement that Mr. Speer read as
coming from Senator Hill, was writ
ten by old man Bradford, of Clarkes-
vllle.
Mr. Bpeer says he took Davis’ name
to the President to kill Pledger with,
as the latter was endorsed by his ene
mies. In this Mr. Bpeer acknowledges
that Davis was recommended by him
to simply satisfy his spite against'S'
few white democrats who said they
would as soon have Pledger as any
other negro, and it is presumed be
would have secured a white man,' but
os Davis was his Mend and Pledger
his enemy, he hung on to Davis.
We presume our nice young con
gressman is quite busy to-day srritlng

of Thursday evening to Ms Gaines

WHY WHITE MEN WENT OH MAT
DAVIS’ BOND.
Mr. SpeealkysfntiCh stfewon titeTact
that a few good citizens of our city went
on the bond of his colored postmaster.
The reason Mr.-. Speer, is qtrite:plain:
they wauted lto make .Ibebsst of the

bad requested: hlih 10 appoint a colored
The persecuted! ?) hero of “Panther
creek" notoriety, has made his appear
ance in our midst, and we may expect
the campaign to open in earnest in a
few days.
Mr. A. 8. Donfty sent the first open
cotton boll to the Banner-Watchman
office yestordry. Mr. Dorsey besides
being a good dtisen, is one of the best
farmers in Clarke county. - ..•
Mr. Speer, do you intend to lift that'
injunction, or will you force' na to pay
gi.AOOto convince the voters’of yohr
political treachery, and {ogive your
“My Dear Mat” letters to this public?
One of the “has been" strong Speer
supporters says that he made a slight
mistake in dealing out bis gifts in
the ninth, as lie promised the wool-hat
hoys the offices, hut gave them to the
wool-head gang.
The republicans propose, it is said,
to carry, with the aid of Jay Hulibell,
th» first, aixth, seventh and ninth dis
tricts in Georgia. Julius M. Epping
is to be their candidate in the first
district, and W. A. Held, of Eatonton,
in tiie sixth.
If Mr. Speer will remove his injunc
tion from this office, we can convince
any man who thinks for himself, and
is not swayed by every plausible
tongue, that our congressman is in
compromising correspondence witli
negroes and radicals ?
Mr. Speer’s late harrangue is said to
have been copied after Oscar Wilde;
but instead of worshipping the sun
flower he substituted the nigger. He
described Sambo as the most chaste,
beautiful, and utterly too-too esthetic
in the sweet sunny south.
Mr. Speer intimated that the Ban
ner-Watchman office was started with
a blacking-box of Ink and a handful
of type. He can't accuse us, however
of raising the money to pay for same
by selling our Influence to the radical
party, like a certain independent con
gressman we know.
Congressman Speer's “spanking
team" is doing good electioneering
work in this end of the district, riding
out the bon-ton dusky maidens on our
boulevards of a pleasant afternoon.
Wonder how this would work if car
ried out in the mountalu counties,
where “Cully' is at a discount?
Query: Mr. Speer did have Mr.
Mitchell, a democrat, appointed route
agent on the North-Eastern, and yet
he claims that he has nothing to do
with these appointments, and is not
responsible for Heard’s appointment.
Will the hero of Doke’a still house
please explain? 1 .Push.
And “Our Emory" was rotiirfyimprr-
pared fbr that serenade f It is true that
he had a ream of notes nnder his arm
and a whole library of the Coheres*
slonal Record on a table at hla side ;
but you m he had neglected to bring
along copies of those Christy tatera
or that editorial In'tbe'Atlanta Con-
cle.
The wool-hat boys in the mountains
say Mr. Speer can’t secure their votes
by asserting that he had Mat D^vjs
appointed as a choice between' two
negroes. They contend that as he
represents a white constituency, he
should have bad a white ip to appoint
ed, or let the matter alone. Further,
they want to know if he can show that
he made any effort whatever tq have
a white man appointed postmaster at
Athens and other offices that he has
tilled with his black pets.
The Evening Herald says: “Prom:
gentlemen of the esgeaiasd ‘Khhwta
ninth district think it a bootless task to
run a candidate against Emory Speer-to
thefeea of MW flffi- 1
phens for governor. This recalls-Sbe
prediction of the boss organ*
nomination or Aleak would
ninth and seventh districts ton 4sM-
pendentism. It Is evidently In n#der for
the redemption plan to materialize."
We beg leave to differ with ** promi
nent gentleman,*' at to the democratic
>roepects in the ninth. We honestly be-
ieve any good candidate can beet Mr.
Speer, and Judge Erwin, it he would
consent to run, wtsdd have a “eraik
over." The anti-Stephens papers are
injuring the democracy of tb« 9th »nt
aiding independents more thau any
words or acts of Mr. Stephens ever did.
The count of delegates for the Con-
gretoiounl nomination in the eigliUi dis
trict up to date stands: Kecse 19, Black
111, DuBose 4, Ilium 4, Pottle 3, and
Johnson's 2 votes yet to be decided.
Johnston is certain for Black, and
Messrs. Reese and Blaek will go into the
convention with 19 and 18 votes respec
tively. The contest thus will be very
close between the two, either uuder the
two-thirds or majority rule. It the ma
jority rule is adopted no one will be
nominated on the first ballot, but on the
second liallot Mr. Black will probably
bo nominated by winning the strength
of Judge Pottle uud Mr. Hines, making
a hare majority, 23 votes. General Du-
Boae’s vote will be given to Mr. Reese
on the second ballot, giving him 23 votes.

We presume . Emory Speer will be
the beneficiary of the Habbell fluid Jn
the ninth district. Things have come
to a pretty pass when our representa
tive raapreeenta himself in some por
tions of the district, as. an independ
ent democrat, and then receives a part

count of the socialistic tendencies of
the people, been uuder the dictation

plays which they deem incendiary.
Thus lUstor! was not permitted to
play Marie Antonlette.
Mr. Speer is one of the best stump
speakers in Georgia; and if you caught
hlmrobblug your chicken roost, and
gave hint time to explain, without
reasoning with yourself, he would
convince you that he did a patriotic
duly in stealing these fowls, and you
are the true villain for expoalug him.
But we’ve got him on the defense now
—a position he was never in before.
