Mis;« M. then, with her own hands,
extricated the victim, who proved to
be a married Indy, and dragged her
to u place of safety. But it was at the
expense of serious injuries to herself,
ns she received bruises from which
this young lady was for some time
delirious. Nobly did she continue the
work until the last person was res
cued from the wreck, when Miss An
nie set to work and carried bucket af
ter bucket of water, until the last
spark was extinguished in the engine.
It must be remembered that this
heroism on the part of Miss Martin
was performed in the face of immi
nent danger to herself, for after the
excitement the young lady was dis
covered to have her arm dislocated in
two places, her side badly scalded,
besides serious bruises on her body.
Had she repaired to a place of safety
as soon as released from the coach, in
stead of returning to the scene of dan
ger, Miss Martin would have escaped
without a scratch.
Her name will ever be endeared to
the unities in the fated first eoach.
OTHER HEROES.
Mr. Davis, the tireman on the Pion
eer excursion train m the time of tlie
accident, will ever ive remembered as
otic ot' the most gallant men t hat ever
pulled u throttle. He was- hurl U
down tlie embankment aud feurfully
bruised by the fall, but heeding not
his injuries Davis set to work likea
brave man to relieve the sufferers.
Where the danger was great eat lie was
always to he found, whether it be ex
tinguishing >ttie lire in the throbbing
engine or carrying the wounded from
the steaming coach. He inbored all
night without a moment’s rest, and it
was not until the excursionists were
safe on their ti Ip home that he permit
ted his wounds to be dressed. He kept
cool and collected, and doubtless sav-
cdmntiy lives. Davis s a hero, apd
deserves the charge of the best engine
on tlie road. This honorable fireman’s
name should he perpetuated.
Mr. J. E. Talniadge also proved
himrfvlf a true hero. He never quitted
the ill-fated coach until the last per
son had been removed, and he then
searched under every seat, lest some
one should be left behind. Mr. Tt af
terwards discovered a flre breaking
out from the looomoti ve, and with Use
assistance of Mr. Homer Thornton,
engineer at the check factory, soon
extinguished the threatening flames.
Thornton covered himself with honor.
Capt. W. D. OlFarrell was another
veteran, and one of the last men to
leave the wreck, working without oee*
nation to save tlie passengers.

18821ms beeri a shocking year thus
far (hr parricides. Guy Smith, the
Missouri boy Just convicted ol mur
dering Ills father, does not stand alone
except for youthfulness. In Jauuary
a protracted quarrel between Jared
Smith, irt' Hlrhmond, Ind., and his
wife and twosons culminated in his
being shot by his son Dan, aged 19,
after which Dan aud an older brother
threw the body into tlie well. In
February, Solomon Richards, of Charl
ton, Mass., was shot aud killed by
Ids sou, ayouug married man. The
murderer claimed that his father had
abused his mother. There was some
evidence tliut he slew his fattier to
get tlie farm. In the same month,
James G. Allison was hanged at In
diana, Pa., for the deliberate murder
of his father.
The father and mother were on bad
terms, and the sd.i sided with his
mother. He was 30. Deter In the
inouth Charles B.Gillem, aged 11, shot
his invalid mother in her bed at Ma
comb, Ohio. Having a dispute with
her, he went into another room, got. a
pistol aud killed her, and when erreaW

February that Johii Lanaba, who Bred

was shot by his daughter, aged 20.

A somewhat similar crime occurred
in May, in the same state, near Mus

to the crime. They said they wanted

W* td*-ful Luck of a Philadelphia Broker al a
Oemu of Match Penny.
Piili.*DEi.Piiia, Aug. 7.—Brokers in
Third street talked ol nothing to-day but
of tlie wonderful luck of one of their
tiunber at the game of match pennies.
The game was played on Saturday af
ternoon after the stock exchange Imd
do-ed. In the office of a leading mem.
ber ofthe exchange a number of brokers
got together and dittcHsed the dullness
of the market. One suggested to the
other in a spirit ol tan that they match
pennies. In the course of fifteen min
ute* all the jiennies that could be got
around the place had passed between
the two gamblers, anil, to'make it inter
esting, they branched from coppers to
five-cent pieces. Quite a good sum had
changed hand* iu this way, and the
game in a short time became exciting,
tbe spectators catering ento it with as
much sest as the two participants, who
by tliis time had become thoroughly ab
sorbed in the game offhauce. Becom
ing excited, they changed tbe five-cent
pieces to dollars, and a large sum of
money passed from one to the other. In
less than an hoar one of the players was
a loser to the extent of $1,500. At this
point there was s lull. Then the winner
said he would give his opponent three
chances to doable or qnlt.- This was ac
cepted, and bn the first match he’ lost,
increasing the anin to #3,000. The sec
ond chance Increased It t» $0,000, and
tbs third to $13,000. This brought the
game to a close. The man who lost gave
his notes for the amodnt add went home.
