Jetluniouiau democracy and tliejvor- •ocution wail have become two of the greatest nuisances that ever entered the poliUeal arena of Ueorgia. There is a regular ground-swell of enthusiasm all over the district for Caudler. He will sweep the old 9th by 9,000 majority. '•««•>< • Wonder If Mr. Speer had the pro priety to postpone his speech in (ialnesville, upon the intelligence of the death of his benefactor, Mr. Hill? We met four gentlemen In one crowd in Gainesville, who had always sup ported Mr. Hpeer, and they averred their intention to goto work now for Candler. . . ,, . , Allen Candler, when’ elected, will see that none but acceptable and com petent men are placed in office. He has no axe to sharpen oh some nigger grindstone. Kmory Spier’s police gnzette, pub lished at Qaldesville, Is distributed from the post-otlice in Athens by his “Dear Mat,” without .money and withbfltpilot.’;; 1 7'V,, - "' i 1 ..'.'" 1 A man who ret uses to think or rea son for himself, hut Is Winded tb, fill argument by the plausible eloquence of a selfish pelttlotan, will oertulnly be for Mr. Spefer. 1 '' *'' * ■ ■■ r ‘ - o We' find that Mr, pandler la even stronger titan Judge Ecwlil In the mountains, and we believe that he will send a majority of 4,000 to meet •is at the Air Line. If the mountain boys would come down to Athens, and hear how the ne groes are yelling for Speer, they would soon discover-which is the white man's party. The tlrst money that Hon. Alleu D. Candler earned be devotedto building a comfortable home for his mother in Homer. He is one of the best anti truest men in the district. From Speer’s account of Ills public services we see no use of having a President, cabinet or congress. The whole burden of making and repealing laws devolved upon his shoulders. Our district will have one of the best men ill the state in the senate next term—Hon. Pope Barrow. He will undoubtedly be a leader in the senate, ns he was in the lower house. If Mr. Speer Is a true democrat, why is it that he is so heartily endorsed by every nigger and radical convention that has yet convened in Georgia? Democrats, did you ever think of this? Mr. Speer openly boasts that he car ries the vote of the ninth district in his vest pocket. Yes, but th'e odor that arises from the class of votes he «.-fries there will drive every white limn from his support. The Gainesville Filth-Slinger hasn’t nor can’t deny our charge that the laudatory editorial! ?) In defence of “Our Emory” was written by that gentleman himself. We produced proof that could not be gotten around. Wo are anxiously awaiting to see Bradford dony copying that Habun let ter. He can’t dodge the issue by sim ply asserting tliat lie is not the author of it. If we mistake not, he is the au thor of nothing save a few radical votes. The Eagle says that Hall will give Candler 1,000 majority. „. Judge Erwin feels not a shadow of doubt about Candler’s election. And even old daddy Felton la. try*, ing to play on the persecution harp. There Is more eloquence in “Uncle Allen’s” grasp than there Is in Emo ry’s sophomore speeches. The white democrats in the district are d ropplng off from Emory Speer’s support like leaves before the autumn blast : OUR EMORY’S” CAMPAIGN ODE. \m'KE-9P0l.D'YB* «**.” V - * H H. f >. ft> *ung, Befortand after taking hi* I\r*ectdlm — ri v <?«•««•* p i r ? <* g |—a jfi V Here to-night I stand beforo-you, V < On my native heath. The republican and negro papers in Georgia are earnestly advocating Em ory Speer for congress In the ninth district. Isn't (hi* rather significant? If Speer Isn’t re-elected It won’t be through want of electioneering py colored postmaster In Athena. We nover.saw a more enthusiastic work er than Mat Davis.' : :i Mr. Candler says he does not accept tlie nomination as a mere matter of form; but he goeB In to win and' will be elected. Our nominee has never been defeated at any task he under took. While Candler was building rail roads and .developing his county, Speer was prancing around behind a fine pair of horses, unpaid for, and trying by incendiary harrangues to organise the. negroes against the wliitesw Mr. Cuudler intends to meet in per son every man in the ninth district before Jhy pampalgn is 6ver. So hold your vote until you see the little game- cock of tlie' I democracy. “Uncle Allen” will wrap himself all around your confidence and respect. A voter who will, close his ears to argument, and let s smooth-tongued political .trickster like Mr. Speer do all the. thinklng.forihim, deserves to serve under nlgges office-holders. .If you are a^niati, prov* it by thluklng and acting for yourself. Dou’tbe a slave to Speer’s fate promises and treacherous record, i u, ■. After patiently waiting for Mr. Speer to fulfill Ids promise made through the FlUh-Sliiiger and remove flint injunction from tills office, we have decided to test the matter iu the courts aud have filed our answer. We will see now if we are not permitted to give those damning letters to the people, penned by their agent in Washington to negroes and radicals in the district. When Mr. Speer was notified of Candler’s nomination, he smilingly remarked, “Well, I shall have Allen to treat!” But you could see that he dreaded the little game cock of the deiuocraoy, who is kuowu to aud be loved by every man, woman and child nrrthoftlie Air-Line, and who has done more to build up and develop his section than any ten men in the district. Mr. M. Thornton, of Atlanta, the self-gppoiuted chairman of a mythical “lllieral” party in Georgia, some time ago published a call for a Conference of Ills party in that city for the 15th instant (Tuesday.) It yas not nu merously attended, as ye gather from our exchanges' that the entire assem blage consisted of tllj&fe spectators and three newspaper me\\. Jn consequence the show adjQurued oyer, to w.ait for an audience. Wo knew .It was false when the Filth-Slinger at Gainesville promised upon ihugetttrn of,Mr* Speer that he would re move our injunction and per mit the publication, of those Christy letters. And that is what the people don’t like. It is claimed that Dr. Speer’s re moval was poliUeal persecution. Dr. Miller, one of the leading Independ ent* in Georgia, voted against him in the matter. This don’t smack, much of democratic persecution.. , i.lu, i The working men in -Athens are organizing a Candler effib; They- to. tend to carry the man chosen from their own ranks safely through the victory. Mr. Speer has no sympathy or for the laboring classes. Allen Caudler is a friend to the working man and carved his own way unaided to fame and fortune. He is noble example for your children, as his life shows what a poor boy can become by hard work aud untiring energy. Mr. Speer has heretofore always managed somehow to keep the de mocracy on the defensive. Now the tables are turned and all the hope ‘Our Emory” has is to jump behind Judge Erwin’s hack and yell out per secution. Dr. Speer is a high-toned, Christian gentleman, honored and revered by ail; and when an ouly son attempts to drag the name of such a father into the filth and slime of a political can vass, to build up persecution material, he will bring upon his own head the contempt ot all good citizens. Mr. George C. Thomas, of the Wat- kinsvillo railroad barbecue commit tee, denies that Mr. Speer baa been Invited to deliver a speech there. He says they intend to discard politics and talk railroad, aud the citizens of Oconee will discountenance any ef fort to turn the gathering into a pollt- caf meeting. The democracy of the 9th district are able to tote their own skillet, and they do not want any political speeches from outside parties. Our little game-cock at Gainesville is enough to tackle the independent Plymouth Rock, with hie spotted po litical plumage and his radical pro clivities. A Georgia congressman says there is now on file in Washington a letter written by Mr. Emory Speer, asking an appointment on Arthur’s cabinet, in which he states that he (Speer) has done more to break up the democratic party than any man in the south. The gentleman says he has seen and read the letter. ' .r >■! -i' • With Candler in congress, out la boring classes will have a representa tive from their own ranks, to the national assembly; gad a mao, , .too, to whom they.cau point with honest pride. Alleu Candler will not , shirk a party vote by going on on invalid tour to some pleasure resort at* time when the democratic party most needs bis services. ■ < - I No one ever accused Mr. Speer of being responsible for the Rountree murder. It was charged that he is responsible for the insolent bearing .of the negroes, by elevating them to im portant offices over white men, and we reassert tliis charge.
